Hopefully not, he's quite a bad footballer

This Marvelous Nakamba deal looks to be on so that would give us Luiz and him for that holding midfielder role from what I've read about them both, if they both sign then we're still 3 away from a perfect window ( GK, RW, CF ) Butland, Maupay would cover that off nicely though and I'd live without a dedicated right winger in that scenario and be very optimistic going into the new season but spending the 50m they'd cost on top is probably delusional

Leeds looking for Chester. 7.5 million being reported.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭rebelomar

Not sure where Chester is in the pecking order of central defenders at the moment?

To me he is still one of our first choice CBs and the RCB spot is his to lose. He is also club captain. Given that, 7.5 is low for what we would be losing.

It probably comes down to what the physios think of his injury and chances of playing through the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,149 ✭✭✭Patser

    That is a tricky one.

Chester is till only 30, brings a wealth of experience, is a leader at the club and last night at least seemed fit and comfortable on the ball.

But is he in the plan - with Engels, Kansa and Huase all there and obviously Mings - and all those needing some game time to develop will Chester get as much game time as he needs....

For me, keep him. Premier League needs a big squad, Villa have had so many new signings we need a leader like Chester to help them bed in, if Mings gets injured Chester becomes automatic 1st choice, and in today's market 7.5 million seems very low

If Chester is as crocked as reported, 7.5 million ain’t terrible.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,847 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

I'd keep him, at least till Jan to see how he gets one, then reassess then.

I like Chester. Think hes been brilliant, bar last season but he was playing with an injury.

I reckon he will be bottom of the ladder though. Hes not one for making a run out of defense with the ball and hes a bit of a hoofer.

None of that would bother me but Smith likes to actually play out of the back with a Centre half on the ball. Mings and Axel must have done it 200 times between them last season.

Some reports this evening that Villa have beaten Sampdoria to the signing of Trezeguet. Nothing too concrete though yet.

    How I see our centre backs. 1. Mings. 2. Chester . 3. Engels 4. Konsa. 5. Hause

Trezeguet deal is supposed to be agreed. 13.5 million.

I see more as Mings with Engels or Konsa, Chester with Engels or Konsa in cup games or in a congested fixture period if Mings needs a rest.

Friendly against Shrewsbury on now, kicked off at 2pm. It's live on Villa's Youtube channel.

Jota and Guilbert started great going forward. Jota one shot cleared off the line and set up Davis to have shot saved over the bar.

0-0 at half time. Lively game though.

1-0 Villa. Hogan scores after some great work from Wesley, he looks very good with the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Hogan scores after nice play from Wesley to play him through.

Steer has looked dodge on a couple of occasions.

    Steer looked very iffy definitely.

Interesting that Kalinic took part in the warm up but not in the match, Steer played both halves. El Ghazi picked up knock in warm up and was withdrawn. Chester walked off injured right before the final whistle as well, hopefully nothing too bad.

Hopefully Guilbert is solid defensively because he's superb going forward. Jota impressed in the first half, some lovely passes. Jack really looked up for it and in great condition. O'Hare a little lost again.

L'Equipe in France reporting tonight that Benrahma wants a move to Villa, and is hoping a deal can be done soon. Villa have supposedly a £16m bid in for him.

Some talk today that Butland discussions might be back on as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Would love to get Benrahma, has a touch of 'genius' about him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 940 ✭✭✭GHOST MGG

Benrahma is out injured and if we did sign him he would not be available for start of season, brentford seem to think he is out till late september

Trezeguet deal is done, should be announced tomorrow. Photo of him signing contract has made its way online.

Suso with the Inbetweeners thumbs up :P

Douglas Luiz gone quiet as well.

Some rumours sprung up in last hour or so that Villa are in talks to sign Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin. Some reports saying the Juventus sporting director is in England to discuss the move. Apparently he was supoosed to go to Benfica but they had some problems with his medical.

Douglas Luiz gone quiet as well.

Still waiting on work permit should be unveiled soon check out his Instagram fairly obvious where he is going

Really well worked goal, 1-0 Villa.

    Jota the scorer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Brilliant second goal too, Jota with a lovely through ball to Wesley who finished it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Guilbert is like a young Seamus Coleman bursting on at every opportunity, he'll be caught out of position plenty of times and it'll be interesting to see what he's like defending.

Jota I think will be the best value for money, reminds me of Mata and Gomes at Everton, he'll free up Jack to get forward more, has that creativity to play a through ball, comfortable on the ball.

Engels is happy to take the ball, looks composed on it, won't see the best of him until next season when he bulks up, he's too skinny now and will be bullied off the ball by stronger players.

Badly need that DM player as Hourihane is gonna be blown away in the PL.

Wesley looks good, plenty of movement, good awareness, can protect the ball and bring others into play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Great goal from Jota. His technique is great.

Green's been disappointing again. He sees a lot of the ball but doesn't do anywhere enough with it. Wouldn't be shocked to see him end up on loan to a Championship club before window closes, especially with Trezeguet in.

    Super talented guy.

Targett looks very tidy at left back. Quicker and better technique on the ball than Taylor. Lansbury played well in pre season so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Grealish 5-1. It looked like Wesley with the assist, camera blocked by something in the corner.

I think Lansbury has the quality to play in the PL, it's just staying fit and injury free that makes him a risk to count on.

Some touch from Hepburn-Murphy there. Has impressed since all the changes.

Marvelous Nakamba set to finally complete his move from Brugge after Villa agreed a fee. Player already in England to finalise it.

    Douglas Luiz confirmed now also

    Douglas Luiz confirmed now also

The tweet still said subject to work permit but I'd guess that means we are still waiting for the formal paperwork but have been given the go ahead that a permit will be approved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Belgian press etc seem to be saying Nakamba is a steal for £11m . From highlights he looks a real warrior type, in the Gueye mould kinda. It's interesting though it's another left footer. Mings, Hause, Taylor, McGinn, Hourihane, Targett, Thor, Davis, even Steer, all left footed. I remember a few years ago having to plug gaps at left back and midfield with right footers, so it's good to see this variation now. Smith also apparently doesn't like playing players out of position as much as he can help it.

Some nice odds on Grealish being PFA Young Player of the year going. Think he might be very underestimated. He had flashes last time around. He beat Liverpool single handedly in the FA Cup Semi Final 4 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,797 ✭✭✭✭JPA

Luiz, Nakamba, Mcginn, Grealish, Wesley, Trezeguet.

This team is starting to look (potentially) very tasty.

He's 24 in September, will he still qualify as a "young player", I presume so if the bookies are quoting him.
