I don't give money to "charity", I give "money" to charity.

I don't give money to charity beyond a few euro to Wikipedia. I don't give money to people begging on the street either, there's quite a few in Dublin who clearly aren't genuine. An ex of mine worked for one of the homeless charities, possibly focus Ireland and she wouldn't be able to walk past anyone without giving them money. She'd be disgusted at me. Again.

I've been out to Moldova volunteering a couple of times which eases my conscience.

I hate those skydiving for charity volunteers though and the like. A largely selfish endeavour dressed up as charity.

I've mentioned this before - I wonder the funds raised for a cause compare when the question is 'I want money for good cause X" versus "I want money to do a skydive in support of good cause X." Which way are people more likely to donate? Which way will the good cause end up with more money?

The bucket shakers at the checkouts drive me insane

Around where we live it's usually something ridiculous like the local girls' hockey team seeking funding for a trip to France or something..

    Seriously just f**k off

Let me tell you that that isn't always the case... I was considering a walk for a well known Irish children's charity. You had to raise a certain amount to go on the walk. Nothing came out of your own pocket. Unless you wanted it to pay that bit first of course. It was a walk in a well known sunny part of the world.

I don't give anything to charity except my old clothes. I don't volunteer except for my helping out with my local soccer club.

I think "charities" are some of biggest scams going.

Over 80% of the money they bring in can go into "administration" before they even give out a penny to the people that need it.

    [...]

There are many fine and effective charities out there and it seems a bit unfair for people to refuse to donate to them just because there are also some ineffective ones and they can't be bothered to distinguish between the two.

How does going out to Moldova "ease your conscience " ?

I suppose it makes me feel like I'm doing something actively to help. And I guess it makes me feel less bad about not donating to charity or giving money to homeless people. Thats probably a bit selfish I know

I don't get why people blow their lid when they find out that a good portion of donations go to paying wages of charity employees. Charities, like any business have running costs. Do you really expect people to work for free and live off nothing?

Most charities get a bad wrap because of a couple of vile CEOs who made themselves rich though donations/severance packages. But I'd be willing to bet most people who work in charities care about their work and aren't working there to steal your donations.

I donate to a charity who are as transparent as they can be, and I hope my money goes to making the world a little bit better.

How much did you, yourself, pay to go to Moldova?

Charities need to be open and up front about the income they get, the salaries they pay, the admin costs and so on.

The Charity Regulator is slow growing his/her milk teeth on this one.

Few people have much faith as to where there few bob goes now.

I have no interest in funding a charity that has a mahoosive building in D4, for example the Irish Cancer Society, or wherever.

Charities are far far too opaque. So no.

Many of the so called charities have been outsourced by Government anyway. So we are paying twice really. It's a joke.

    Just again to mention.

Entities like Enable Ireland, CRC and the likes should NEVER have to rely on charitable donations.

The services provided should be there as a given.

Jeeeeezus why should kids/adults need to fundraise for basic services. That is unreal to me.

I've stopped giving money to any charity that the CEO is on over €75K a year or is undisclosed and I also won't give any money to any religous charity. This means about 10% of the charities in the country I would be able to give to.

A pal went on one of those wheezes where you raise a few thousand for the charity and then they pay your air fair and accommodation costs while you walk in the sunshine.

She came back and said never again, the organisers ate out every night on the charities credit cards and they hired a car even though they were supposed to be walking too. They spent so much money that could have gone directly to the people in need.I get begging envelopes for this charity through the door and I throw them in the green bin.

I see Paul Kellys sister has been cleared of all wrongdoing in relation to Console, she didn't sign for anything, her name was used.

How in the name of God has no one been charged with embezzlement in this case.Have the Gardai taken any action.

Flights are 450e or so. Accommodation and food dirt cheap.

I was waiting for your post about Console!

I am still waiting to hear what action has been taken in relation to Console, why shouldn't I mention it.

Thats the problem with this country, we hear a big hoo haa about these charity scandals and the world and its mother promise to deal with the transparency issues, it all dies down again because its not as if any individual is out of pocket, its just the suckers like me who have donated a lot of money that are affected.

Every single charity in the country should be given a time frame to register with the Charities regulator and if they don't they should be shut down.I had three separate direct debits set up to charities and I closed them all down.

Charities should also be banned from calling to peoples houses to set up direct debits.I have known three elderly people who have early dementia who have signed up to these direct debits to get rid of chuggers at the door, the elderly don't even know what they are signing, its a joke.

Did you work for Console fresh popcorn, would you rather the general public not demand answers on this.

I'm a middle aged Dub so I don't have much to learn about people. I prefer not to always assume the worst, true. What harm if I give someone a few euro and they buy drink? No skin off my nose.

That's not what I meant, it's easy enough to spot a gargler or a junkie. I mean it's naïve to assume just because someone asks for money they must "need" it. If you're a middle aged Dub surely you've heard of professional beggars?

Not everyone who asks you for cash, has been battered by circumstance into swallowing their pride - some are just shameless opportunists.

Of course I've heard of professional beggars but I still believe they need the money. I'm not naïve at all. Just prefer not to judge.

Company I deal with in work is based in Lithuania - their truck is regularly packed with these charity clothes bags - the driver told me it's a nixer for him, some bloke throws him a few quid to bring them back to Lithuania so they can be sold on in markets (I'm not sure where he gets them from)
