Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How much did you spend on servicing and maintaining in the last year?

just curious as to what is the average a person will spend on servicing and maintaining a car in a year. I don't want to count fuel or depreciation in this, just servicing and failed parts. Obviously if your car is newer it will be a lot less (as should be the case since your depreciation will be higher).

    2003 Audi Allroad 2.5 TDi 245k miles

9k Mile Service including oil/filters etc. €130 (no labour as I did it myself)
4 Tyres (from Camskill and fitted locally) - €480
Timing belt and water pump (also replaced starter motor) - €750 (including €70 for used starter) - didn't do this myself so includes labour
Two front control arms (fitted myself) - €240
Two replacement xenon bulbs (fitted myself) - €160
Two front air springs (fitted myself) - €320
Two rear air springs (fitted myself) - €400
Two rear shocks (fitted myself) - €220
    Wheel alignment - €60

Expensive enough year, but there was stuff that needed to be done like timing belt and suspension that should keep me going for another 3-4 years at least. DIY saves me a fortune.

    98 Honda Integra. 160,000 Kms.

Drop links and other bushings in rear. 150 quid.

Distributer cap and rotor. 80 quid IIRC.

    4 tyres. 340 quid.

    Fuel filter. 18 quid.

    NGK spark plugs. 35 quid.

Oil, oil and air filter. 60 odd quid.

Recaro seat bolster foam. 80 quid(that was more elective than required TBH).

    Rust proofing gear. 120 quid.

That's it really and an "expensive" year for me. The vast majority of years it's just the oil/filter/pads change. Other than consumables like that(about a hundred quid a year) it has cost me well under two grand in ten years of ownership. Timing belt changes and a set of coilovers the only major things(and TBH the coilies were me getting fancy. :D The originals are grand and in the shed).

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

2000 Peugeot 406 HDi Estate (based on about 20k km per annum):

    - A set of new bulbs - about €70 (wasn't necessary, but nice to have),
    - Engine oil with filter, air filter, fuel filter - €40,
    - Cabin filter - €10,
    - Gear oil (unnecessary, but good to get it done again) - €20,
    - A coolant pipe - €20,
    - Brake caliper seals (replaced unnecessarily) - €30,
    - Various fuel lines (replaced due to several mice bites) - €75,
    - Timing belt, coolant pump, tensioner, pulley (first time ever replaced) - €70.

That is about it. Some works were unnecessary, but I like keeping things on top...

    Citroen c4 1.4 petrol 2006

    Only bought end of 2015.

    Bad start......

Service in January , tie rods, alt belt , all usual oil,air filters € 385

    Turned out head had gone € 670 ( timing belt/water pump oil/filter.

Some over heat part a month after cost 90

    3 new tyres €270

    Seat covers € 35

Touch wood nothing has gone wrong since plus drove from Kerry to wales last July and escaped ;)

One thing tho ,a local guy drove into side of my car and caused 600 worth of cosmetic damage and paid up no problem . I didn't fix car and just paid money to Indy mech as head gasket was due to be paid so that helped the pain a small bit

    Total 1440 spent
    Minus damage -600

2006 Alfa 159 1.9 JTS (yep, one of rare the petrol ones!), 137.000 Km (give or take):

    Standard yearly service (oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter): ~75 Euro, DIY;
    Sparkplugs: ~70 Euro
    2x Front upper wishbones (TRW): ~150 Euro, DIY;
    4x Shock absorbers + 2x Rear springs: ~800 Euro including labor;

So we're around the 1100 Euro marker, but I provided the parts to the garage and managed to get some excellent deals on them. Would have been 200-300 more otherwise; Also, the car really only needed the front shocks replaced, but having to change the rear springs, I took the opportunity for new rear shocks as well.

Zero, bought it up North and when checking with Honda UK it was on a service plan (dealer selling it did not know so kept that to myself) so herself popped up for the major 3 year service to Newry and everything done for nought.
A sensor went last week and the local garage put it through on warranty even though 3months out of Honda warranty

Key reprogramme after I did something silly 90 euros

    1994 Fiat Tipo 1.4 S

    x4 new plugs - €12

That's pretty much it for maintenance. I did buy alloys and tyres too but changed back to the steel wheels.

Bought in Jan 2016 with 58k miles. 63k on the clock this morning. Passed NCT in July '16.

Can't complain @ that. Will get it serviced soon.

New shocks and springs all round: €350
    2 Indicators: €36
Brakes all round inc Dot 5.1 fluid: €250
8 tyres (new set with the car and wore another new set after them): €620
    2 balljoints: €40
    Draglink: €135
Bulbs (tail light, dipped beam): €20

    4 oil filters: €24
A battery for the key: €3
95ah battery (to replace what looked like the original) €95

Total cost for the year: €1707. I probably have missed one or 2 things!

There are various components/trim pieces such as the sunvisors/auto dim mirror/sunroof switch/mats/fuel cap etc that were robbed from various other cars. The oil was a bit short but I have a top up can of 5w40. I use a cone filter I can wash and re oil. Floor had to be welded but done in-house.

Insurance was circa €900, tax is usual 2.2 in quarters

37k miles and climbing, I'll keep driving it until I can drive it no more :)

    Oil - €30
    Oil Filter €10
    Air filter - €14
Labour €0 as I done it myself.

Total €54. I done approx. 18000km in that time and needed absolutely nothing else. 2015 was a dearer year as I needed front discs and pads for front and rear as well as an annual oil/filter change so I spent around €200.

You cant beat servicing costs for petrol cars.

'B' service (brake fluid, plugs and air filter replaced, annual inspection and oil/filter change) cost €660.

    That's it.

HID ballast failed and replaced by dealer or would have cost the guts of a grand for parts and labour.

Will need rear shocks this year. €250ish each plus labour. Plus front disks and pads all around, transmission fluid change, probably a battery (AGM start/stop), an 'A' service and update the nav maps.

Somewhere around €2200-2400 to be spent on it I'd say.

    All main dealer prices.

It is... Makes no sense as you would be downgrading the reliability...

What about the transmission oil for example, do people not do the oil changes it if the manufacturer does not recommend it?

It was either done by me or my fairly cheap mechanic. A lot of suspension work wasn't needed, I just did the whole front and most of the rear because I wanted it done! Some of it was preventative too more than needed.
