My house insurance for 2017 -2018 is due soon. I went online to see what quotes I could get. I just wanted to share this with other people here to show it pays to shop around for house insurance.
I also found out that if you don't pay upfront for house insurance and spread the payments over 8/9 or 10 months this can cost up to 20% more.

I was looking for buildings cover for €150,000 and contents of €25,000. Some of the websites don't allow for this combination so I went for the closet figure available. I wanted an excess of €250 also.

All the figures below were if you paid for the policy upfront.

    dearest was Axa.ie €155,000 build contents 25,000 cost 458.07

    Chilli.ie build €155,000 contents - €25,000 cost €335
    Aviva €155,000 build contents €31,000 cost 421.95
    123.ie €160,000 build contents 25,000 cost €347.19 - with 500 excess - €308.78
    AA.ie €150,000 build contents 25,000 cost €359 - with €200 excess
    libertyinsurance.ie €150,000 contents 25,000 - 316.22 - 250 excess
    getcover.ie €150,000 build contents 25,000 - €412.52

The best quote I got was with quotedevil.ie WAS €230 for - €160,000 buildings cover with €30k contents - this was underwritten by Zurich insurance.

My advice is to shop around for house insurance from the dearest quote I got to the cheapest quote there was a difference of €228.07.
To keep costs down try to pay for house insurance upfront.

I hope this helps some other people out.

Thanks for that okiss, our insurance is up in April and it's on our 'to do'list.
I think we paid €400 odd last year, I'll definitely be shopping around!
    Cheers :)

Very good OP. Just a further bit of advice. Your examples show the General policy excess. Most insurers have a separate excess for Water Damage, which is by far the most common cause of loss. This can vary from €250 to €2,500, even with the same insurer through different distribution channels
