There is no right wing partys in this country. There either center or really left of center. FF/FG are by any measurement socialists, high taxes, high levels of social welfare, high #'s of public servants, very well paid public servants by international levels , social housing, free healthcare, foreign aid etc etc etc.

Unless we go to the levels of Greece or Russia i can't see how further left a functional government could go without having to raise so much taxes, making it pointless working.

I wouldn't see the greens as either left or right, they just have green policies. Some good, some bad.

Oh for crying out loud, well maybe ya if you compare us to basket case ecconomies. In comparison to the rest of the EU we do not have high % of public sector workers, a large social welfare budget, free healthcare etc etc.

Here's a bit about the Labour guy who apparently ran in 2016 as well, without making any impression on me

Good for you. How a candidate from this constituency is against the new road to Westport beggars belief. Not only from a traffic and safety aspect, but from a development standpoint

If the Greens kill the road I suppose everyone will be super fit from all the walking and cycling they’ll be doing......it might also help them when they’re being chased by the new wolves the Green Party are going to introduce

, were just #8 of the top 10 socialist countries in the world.

    "Ireland
Ireland has arguably one of the best welfare systems in the world, with unemployment checks higher on average than Denmark or Switzerland’s average. Around 25 percent of Ireland’s GDP goes towards paying for the welfare system, as compared to 15 percent of America’ GDP towards America’s social support programs."

Its only people living in this country that do not see FF/FG as socialist. Generations of handouts have generated that sense of entitlement. Try living in a country that isn't socialist and you soon realise just how socialist Ireland actually is. With our tax take we should have one of the best infrastructures and healthcares in the world per population, however the vast majority of our tax income goes on social welfare and PS salaries. Rightly or wrongly its what people vote for so thats what we get. But there is no denying that we have the option in this country of socialist parties or very socialist parties.

The irony is that if we weren't as socialist, lots of the greens objectives would already be implemented.

What 'they' did?? Had two ministers in a govt that lasted three and a half years yet they seem to get most of the blame for the crash/bailout etc :pac:

And yes actually i do think a green agenda will be good for the country in the longer term

Hopefully we never have to find out

At last, a reliable steer on this question courtesy of Patrick Power Esquire:P
    https://www.paddypower.com/politics?tab=irish-constituencies

They have Mulherin @4/6 and Dillon @ 10/11, so the bounce of a ball in it.:D Surprisingly McHugh is next favourite @ 3/, but I guess they're covering themselves in the event of a massive green surge
    Three sitting TDs are unbackable...

Ring, Calleary and Chambers are safe. Chambers odds have drifted slightly from 1/10 to 1/8 but still looks fairly safe.
I think the Dillon / Mulherin battle will be interesting and they've now switched places and odds in the betting with Dillon now slight favorite at 4/6 and Mulherin 10/11. Still very little between them and hard to call but it's obviously getting serious when Dillon is getting Mulherin posters removed from his designated area.

    https://www.midwestradio.ie/index.php/news/36357-fg-s-director-of-elections-in-mayo-says-he-requested-removal-of-michelle-mulherin-posters

McHugh has improved slightly from 3/1 to 2/1 but not enough yet to challenge for the final seat.

Re the bolded bit, according to Eurostat our spend on Social Protection as a % of GDP is around 15%, well below the EU average. Any comparitive figures for public sector pay that i have seen do not support your argument either.

Did she actually say this? If so fair enough, i dont think id agree with her on that. I do know she argued that the money could be better spent

This will take a journey of 20mins down to one of 15 mins.

What a phenomenal waste of money.
    Who is this even for!?

Perhaps, instead of spending years ploughing up the countryside for a road Nobody has ever mentioned wanting we could start local energy projects?

Off all things to go after ring and the amount of money he has sent west for various projects.

Mulherine had a sh1te load of posters up in dillions area and there was a pack made not to go in to others areas with posters and I think she has being canvassing well in to dillions area as well.
It will be very close between them I've no time for her to be honest

    She hasn’t a clue

    Just one example:

The exit from the 2 girls schools in Castlebar dumps out onto the existing “relief” road (near McHale Park) right where the thru traffic backs up at Duffy’s roundabout.

Someone told me that it can take 30 minutes to get out at going home time. How is having 100 cars idling for 30 minutes every day good for the environment? I’m sure if you asked those parents they would have a very positive view of the new dual carriage way

Its not the most dangerous road in the country by far - maybe the new road is to help fast track the Botox quicker to market?

She said no one wants the new road

Ask any of the hundred parents picking up from St Angela’s/St Joseph’s every day and I’m sure they would respectfully disagree

Or the residents on the derrywash road whose road is barely wide enough for 2 cars is used as a bypass of the town.

Been down there once or twice. Don't forget like the game of Russian roulette with an unmanned level crossing with the open gates.

    Ah the daily mail!

In fairness it was on mid-west on Wednesday, she had her posters up around Kilkelly, contrary to what had been agreed internally in FG. They were taken down, she called the guards. The campaign director for Mayo FG came out to say he had authorised it. You couldn't make it up

Mail seem to have more 'juicy' details though, don't see anything about Dillon's dad in the MWR report. Although unless Michelle's posters were full frontal and the Kilkelly parish priest ordered them to be taken down as promoting 'fornication', I'm struggling to see how this story merits front page coverage...

It's the Daily Mail. I'm surprised they didn't run a 16 page pull out.

Alan Dillon explains why he's running for the Dail
My decision to run for election in the Mayo constituency comes from a deep-rooted belief that the 158 TDs, representing 40 constituencies in Dáil Éireann, must be reflective of modern Irish society.
I also believe that politics needs a mix of talent and ability and I wouldn't even consider putting myself forward if I did not believe that I could deliver for Mayo, for many years to come.

I suppose it beats Graham Geraghty's response when asked the same question - "Sure why not?". Marginally...

You'd see a more creative answer in a Junior Cert essay. I'm afraid this fella will probably nab the fourth seat. Hasn't a clue and just looking for a big job...

I hate to say it but for many voters elections have become nothing short of popularity contests
