Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What cars have big power but low tax?

There are loads of cars I'd love to own but I refuse to pay huge money for road tax. So many large engines cars are well over 1k per year just for road tax which really bugs me. Right now I drive an Audi TT Quattro, 225bhp - which is €636 for the year. I'd love something bigger and more powerful but preferably something that the tax is not more.

Since the changes in 2008 there are some cars which are pretty cheap on tax despite having big engines - does anyone know what cars have 200+bhp but a relatively low tax? Right now looking at Audi A5's but wondering what else I should consider?

    Edit: Budget 15-20k max

Mk2 TT/GTI are good natural successors to a mk1 TT or an 8P S3 (a mapped one is on a par with the modern hot hatches)

The A5s are heavy cars and not really that powerful imo.

    What about a Golf R?

Probably want to spend about 15k maybe a small bit more. Have had a classic in the past - they are not reliable - also looking for something comfortable...

Post 2007 BMW E60 530d and 535d would be €570 and €750 respectively. However post 2008 examples still cost a fair bit more to buy than their older more expensive to tax versions.

    BMW 330d - 3 litre turbo 6 cylinders, 260bhp, 560Nm Tq - €270 per year

Remap to 300bhp and 620 Nm Tq and pay same tax :D

BMW 640D is 313bhp and only €390 per year to tax, the 535D would be the same from 2012 on I think.

Thanks i had not really thought about the BMW's but that's definitely a very good option

People are mentioning re-mapping, I'm curious, given insurance companies in Ireland like to increase premiums for barely any reason at all how do people fare getting insurance with re-mapped chips.

lol i dont imagine anyone declare anything unless its rally car and driver, hassle of mentioning it alone would imagine double the insurance. And as insurance stands they cant investigate simple scam on claims, let alone perform ECU check.

since stuff as alloy wheels on perfomance car could be considered modification, custom exhaust etc.

All considered if one were to get into accident it wouldn't be fault of chipped ecu, since main factors usually are either driver or speed, not extra few bhp which makes little to no difference when accidents happen.

I declared the JB4 on my 335i to my insurance company and it went up a little bit. My current car won't be getting a remap for a good while but when it does I will be enquiring with my insurance beforehand.

Nothing worse than the scenario of being in an accident which isn't your fault and sh!tting yourself that you won't be covered because of an undeclared map. It's like not wearing a condom and then being worried you got a girl preggers :pac:

nothing I can think of, where you wouldnt be done on depreciation... E636 isnt near high tax anyway!

What year did this kick in? Looking online for a few 2008-2009 and some are at 1500 road tax. Some are €750 which is not too bad.

they are very recent cars, like in the last year or two. Hence like I said, these cars will cost a fortune...

Remapped 2.2 Civic will give you over 200BHP and around 6s 0-60mph.
All that for 280 per annum.

    F10 525d with 218bhp & 450Nm (270/550 Remapped)

Depending on the exact spec, it's either 139g Co2 which is €270 or 142g which is €390.

Had a Civic type R in the past, great cars but looking for something with more comfort.

I don't want to turn it into a petrol v diesel debate but torque is for fulling trailers :)

I think you should highlight your budget in the initial post to stop people recommending new cars, also perhaps you might be open to diesel i don't know i was being tongue in cheek. Big horsepower diesels are fine for blasting down motorways but i'm guessing you'd like something that's a little bit of craic to drive.

    Get a spin in a post 08 335/535/635 and tell me ya need/want a petrol ;)

Another vote anyway, twin turbo, more torque than E60 M5 and 30mpg around town.

Lexus rx450h will give you around 300bhp and lots of torque but still petrol. Comfy and lively in a straight line corners would be an issue though. Low tax around the 2010 mark and thereafter less than €300 as far as I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,297 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Lexus GS450h would be very quick in a straight line too but it wouldn't be a driver's car if that's what you're looking for. 3.5 litre petrol and electric motor with 08 onwards costing €750 to tax.

It's a remarkably reliable car, but I find the ride very trashy in them. While on the lexus front I'm surprised no one has mentioned the GS450h. 348bhp with the 2012 model being 200 odd euro to tax.

F10 2010+ 530d (258bhp), my tax just arrived €570pa, 330d is nice but you couldn't swing a cat in it, 530 isn't a whole lot better but 3 adults in the back of a 3 series is very tight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 992 ✭✭✭bf

    I have a F10 535 - 313bhp & €390pa tax and decent fuel economy but you'll struggle to get a good F10 525/530/535 within budget

I had to go to UK, couldn't find one with electric folding mirrors and widescreen dvd, Irish specs are pretty poor in comparison to U.K.

Fiesta ST is a good choice. Tax is 280 p/a and Can get around 45 to the gallon but what fun would that be? Insurance is quite low also. Bit hard on the road though if you live in a small town or village it might not be ideal. I got used to it but the rattles frighten me, and them potholes   :(

The F30's not bad size wise (is there much between it and the f10) seems a lot better than the one before it...is the e39 that boxy, was about 15yrs since I test dove one seemed big at the time. Moved from the f60 to f10 and the f60 felt a lot more spacious inside, really felt its age though when got one on loan while the f10 was in for a service.

I'm not 100% certain of the tax on this but they did come down to €750 on the new system at some stage from €1494 on the old system. This would be a good purchases IMO but from what the ad says I think it's a Jap import...

I know the tax is an important factor - and your budget is 15 - 20k - what about buying something in or around half your budget and paying the higher tax rate?

There is some great value to be got for higher CC engines on the old tax rate.

Possibly, but it would have to be seriously good value. Paying €1500 a year for tax is seriously painful!!

Any suggestions? I'd also want to have fuel efficiency in mind - I could not justify something that only did 20mpg. I'm not looking for 400bhp - just something reasonably powerful but with some luxury and comfort.
