I was wondering about doing a small project for college looking at a particular element of a townland name and whether the underlying geology has any bearing on this.
Does anyone know if there freely available geological information at that level (townland)? I'm not coming from a geological background so I'm not aware of what is available.

I see for example that this is available in paper form
    http://www.gsi.ie/Publications+and+Data/Maps/Geology+of+Tipperary+-+Sheet+18.htm

How detailed is this and would I be able to use it to figure out townland areas from it?

Go to the www.osi.ie and use their map viewer. On the left click Nature and Environment under Data Catalogue and under Geology you can turn on the Lithology layer. You can also turn on townlands boundaries under Public/Government services. You can change the transparency of the layers too for clarity and reorder them in the Selection box. With the layers turned on, you can select an area of the map and a popup box will give you info on it. If you have a couple of layers open, click the right arrow at the top of the box and it will tell you the info available.

Thanks Maldesu - that sounds exactly like what I need.
