Has anyone with Control basic on Gamepass splunked up the 30 quid for the Ultimate version with next gen upgrades?

I’ve only played around an hour of it but I really like it. So losing all my game saves and starting again on the next gen version wouldn’t be that painful.

But paying €30 for a higher spec version of a game I can play for free kinda stings. Especially when ultimate is the bloody free game of PS this month.

But the graphics upgrades in Ultimate look really tangible in the digital foundry vids.

Was in the same boat. Took the free option. Will replay the ultimate version of control in a few years time when it's cheap. Or on game pass. Have loads of other games to play anyway. Having said that, 60FPS on the X would have been extra nice, but I thought it ran brilliantly on the Series X anyway.

Also looking for suggestions for what to play next on Game Pass. Since I got the Series X at the beginning of January, I've completed Gears 5 campaign, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Call of the Sea and I've recently started Tell Me Why which is a bit slow-paced but enjoying the storyline.

As you can probably tell I'm pretty much open to all types of games. Hollow Knight is also downloaded as it came recommended in the Ori category. I'm also dipping in and out of Forza Horizon 4 and FIFA 21 (although the game has changed a huge amount since I last played FIFA religiously).

On a side note, a big thank you to the folks on the supply thread, I managed to pick up a Series X from Smyths in mid January after a few years of falling out from playing video games regularly. Also picked up that LG Nanocell TV from Littlewoods which is 4K @ 120HZ - loving it so far so thanks to the person who suggested it on the TV thread.

Recently enjoyed Supraland and currently Journey to the Savage Planet as exploration/puzzle games with mild action/FPS elements.

I bit the bullet after starting Control on game pass, I didn't get the hype at first and then the game / story clicked. I bought the Ultimate edition to get the Series X upgrades - it was about $25 there recently - the Ray Tracing and graphics updates are really nice touches and I usually go for Graphics mode over performance. The 60FPS performance is really quick and changes the feel of the game up quite a bit, especially when there is debris and mayhem around you.

Likewise, I noted that Control ultimate edition is a separate game, your save file does not transfer over. I knew this in advance so stopped playing the standard one until I could pick up the story in ultimate - plus the DLC. I stopped a little over an hour in to the game.

Mad that the progress does not carry over... I finished it 2 weeks ago before the Series X patch/update came out. I think I ended on 830/1000G so I gave it a good go. It was fun, with a mental story. Took about 10/11 hours to complete.

I see Jurassic World Evolution and FF XII are up on Gamepass today. Delighted with Jurassic World as I almost shelled out to buy it on the switch a couple of months ago. I've never played FF before, is this a good one to start on?

I have a quick question about GamePass. I have an XBox Series S. I've ordered an Alienware PC and I wonder if I were to install a game on the PC that I have played on the XBox, will progress carry over?

FFXII is a bit of an outlier. Where the previous games were turn based with you picking each character's actions in turn, and the newest games are real time action games with you controlling one character with AI companions (which I hate), FFXII was a bit of a crossroads between the two.

It is semi realtime and you only control one character of your party, but their actions are pretty automatic, they attack automatically on a timer and only do something different if you choose it, so you're not actually manually attacking and blocking etc. Meanwhile your companions are AI controlled, but you define a list of conditions and actions to define how they play in advance, effectively "programming" the AI.

It's actually a pretty interesting system that I'd like to see them try again. The game is also much more of an open world than the other games, with large areas that you roam around in with monster hunting quests etc. It was definitely influenced by MMOs that were popular at the time. Other FF games tend to be much more linear. Often there will be a large open looking world but you're always just traversing it to one specific story objective, rather than going off on various side quests like FFXII.

All that said, I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. If you do bounce off it though I wouldn't write off the whole series and I'd try a more traditional FF game. Final Fantasy X remastered is due on gamepass soon I believe, it's a truly excellent game and much more representative of traditional FF gameplay.

You just triggered nostalgia overload quokula. I think I even have the 300 page FFXII guide in a box somewhere. Some cool side quests as well, Sky Pirate's Den being particularly cute.

Yes it should do. I am currently playing titles like Forza 4 and play on both the Xbox and PC. When I load up the game on either machine it updates to last postion you were in the game - it downloads from the cloud and away you go - obviously it needs to be the same gamepass subscription.

Another key benefit of the Ultimate subscription is that you can play one game on Xbox and another on the PC at the same time. It cannot be the same game but still thats great value. I did try it on another XBOX and gamepass will only work on one xbox at the same time but will allow Xbox and PC at the same time if that makes sense.

PS - great choice in Alienware - we love our one. I know people say you can build cheaper etc however I wouldnt have a clue

for a game to carry across progression between PC and Xbox, it needs to be a "play anywhere" title. A number of titles on games are play anywhere titles. I don't think Jurassic World is one.

Only an hour into Doom eternal and wondering how I've never played any of them before!

The 2016 game is down in price this week for €9.99, €14.99 for the Slayers Pack which adds Doom(1993), Doom II and Doom 3.

In the end I bought Control Ultimate. You can toggle between 30fps (with RTX) or 60fps and holy **** it’s night and day.

And Control is great. A really weird, brilliantly crafted world with a curated single player story experience. And the ability to tear the scenery apart is amazing.

This generation is *really* gonna make it hard to go back to 30 FPS on anything. Give me 60 FPS at 1080p over 30fps any day.

Ah, ta for the tip on the Slayers Pack! You can flick through the store quite a lot without seeing some of these bundle combos.

Doom Eternal is mighty impressive but I'd still take 2016 over it for sheer simplicity. Central hub, weapon mods, upgrade menus, jumping puzzles etc all a bit much for me for a Doom game. It's seriously impressive though and looks and plays gorgeously on the new systems.

Put a lot more time than I'm proud of into Jurassic Park Evolution over the weekend.

My first time playing a building sim on Xbox having played loads on PC overs the years. It works very well but gets a little sluggish on my Xbox One X when the theme park grows beyond a certain point. Addictive little game. Found myself trying to complete one more contract before turning it off then one more...

Me too! I spent way too much time on it too. Kept saying I was going to stop & move to other games but found myself an hour later still going...

I was all ready to start Control after hearing it had got it's next gen update until I realised the nonsense they pulled with that Ultimate Edition. €30 extra for some ray tracing, no thanks. Turns out the ultimate edition is on PS Plus this month and has dualsense support too so just gonna pay €9 for one month there and play it on PS5.

FWIW I asked something similar a few days ago and ended up buying the ultimate version.

Forget Ray tracing - the 60 FPS mode is transformative. Day and night a different feeling game.

Yeah I've started it on PS5 now and going from 30 to 60fps makes a big difference, it appears to be the way to go. I didn't realise you had to choose between that and ray tracing, I thought you'd get both :-(

Finished yakuza 0, surprised how hooked In I was, probably 70+ hours and still wanted to 100% it, would take too long but I look forward to playing the rest of them, I'll play something else first before I jump onto the next one

Zero is a great starting point. Always impressed how the Yakuza games have such small maps but make them infinitely more interesting and organic than the huge maps in the like of Ubisoft games.

Madden 21 coming to EA Play soon, do we get all of their stuff on Gamepass at the same time? Madden is the perfect benefit for me of EA Play / GP, it's worse than Fifa for being a copy/paste, I only play single player on it so no benefit to me to get it at the start of the lifecycle and it's getting released just at the end of the season so I can get my NFL fix for a bit longer. Lovely.

Is that trick with the €1 offer for Ultimate still working? On one of my other accounts, the join for €1 offer for the ultimate is there. If i was to buy it, add gold membership and cancel the auto renewal, would this extend the ultimate up until gold runs out?

I bought it during sale and then very shortly it was announced for game pass... was upset to say the least. Its okay game, if you like the whole community built tracks etc, but I found it a bit lacking if you want normal racing. Multiplayer was totally dead when I bought it, maybe with it on game pass, it got better.

I downloaded Wreckfest on my laptop last night and had a good crack with it, but playing on keyboard is a bit arse.
Downloaded it on Series X just now, and got a bit disappointed with 30fps lock... 4k apparently. Such a shame. I really can't do 30fps, a specially in racing games.

I wonder when/if Bethesda's back catalogue goes up? I know there's loads of subtle intricacies to an acquisition like this which might delay the process, but to be honest I'd be kind of expectant that the likes of Oblivion, Fallout 3, Wolfenstein, Doom 2016 etc find their way on to the service now that they're in bed with Microsoft.

Could do with a few more heavy hitters each month, especially with the lack of X/S exclusives. One or two sports and indie titles and 700 Yakuza games ain't gonna cut it!

Yep, they've polished the crap out of it.
Can't imagine what the next gen version will be like.
I tend to get bored with Forza and start driving as the crow flies. :)
Really I need to play it properly.

No issues getting onto multiplayer games, yeah most likely thanks to game pass.

I agree with other poster, it's no Forza. I very nearly gave up in the early stages but finding it good fun and glad I stuck with it. Its very easy though, even on hard setting. But there's something therapeutic about acing track after track.

Nothing has happened yet as the deal does not yet have regulatory approval. The EU should be announcing their decision soon (this week, actually), and Microsoft have a gaming event pencilled in for later this month, so I'd guess that's when they announce what they're going to be doing with the back catalogue.
