i tried to create a website under construction page with the domain i bought from go daddy. i saved the page to my desktop but in order to upload it online it tells me i need a server? i dont know what that is or how it works. are servers free?

It kinda appears you don't have enough knowledge yet to use ftp and web servers.

I suggest you try using one of the many free website creators out there instead. This should get you into the hang of things.

Transfer the domain to squarepsace, use their site builder. Much more your level.

Sorry OP, but looking over your post history you are clearly out of your depth, get someone whom knows what they are doing to set your website. If you want to host it yourself then you need a webserver along with a static WAN IP or some kind of DNS redirecting service.

A server is just a fancy name for a computer that hosts a website . For example boards.ie is hosted on a server, no sure where it si located. With the right software, any computer can be turned into a server.

Go Daddy also provides hosting https://uk.godaddy.com/hosting/web-hosting. You might already have it.

Self-hosting would be a mad option for some of the following reasons:

• The OP doesn't have the skills or experience.
• Many ISPs forbid it in their T&Cs.
• The time cost of maintaining would dwarf the cost of a hosting package.
• Then what about email hosting. That's a nightmare to setup and run properly.

I agree, OP would be way out of his depth, hence why i said get someone to setup his website for him.
