BBC forecast for Cork tomorrow evening,Friday, showing lightning from 7 to 10. Only checking the BBC forecast with the last month so don't know much about their accuracy or otherwise. Wonder how this will turn out.

Heavy rain shower just passed through Dublin 16. No sign of any thunder, but amazing cloudscape all round this afternoon, with lots of anvils to be seen.

Yeah, I remember that SIGMET but does that cover part of the English Channel or southern Celtic Sea? Because there were no white cloud tips on the Sat images. Perhaps there were a few small white tops at times?

The EUMETSAT Nowcast site shows up to date cloud top heights and temperatures. The other night it was showing cloud tops of 10,000-11,000 m over Ireland.

Out of curiosity, what cloud heights did my little belter have here north of Gorey in the past 15 minutes? :D

I operated a flight from Dubrovnik last night took us an hour to pick our way through the storms over Germany. We were at FL360 and still sitting in the tops. Some of the cloud heights were at FL410. Did get a nice noctilucent display the closer to DUB we got though.

This suggests that the cloud tops didn't get very high at all. So certainly not the best outcome considering the heat and humidity we had in place at the time.

Cloud top temps during the height of the storm:

    Scale:

I recorded a rain rate of almost 200mm/h during its peak, not something you get everyday from ordinary convective events. Cloud tops may not have been high as over the S of UK, but none the less, we got torrential rain and intense thunder and lightning, so there is something more than cloud height alone at play here. And as far as I can gather, (judging from IR cloud imagery alone so may well be wrong) cloud heights were higher during the passage of the cold front yesterday morning, yet rain rates were lower (51.7mm/h peak) with no thunder and lightning.

    More thunder in South Kildare

No thunder, but heavy rain showers and dark, tallish clouds (not great with weather terms!), definitely look different then the others. Cork City, bishopstown area :)
