Psychiatrist recommendation

    Hi all

Not for me but for a close friend - can someone recommend a Psychiatrist who specialises in addiction (alcohol/prescription drugs) in Limerick or Dublin?

I managed to help him get GP referral for St John of Gods but he was assessed by way of a telephone 'interview' and was deemed not severe enough for admission. There have been some threats of suicide whilst under the influence so we feels it's important and I'm not sure what the best course of action is right now.

    Thanks

Please refer your friend to Pieta House, they have a proven track record in dealing with some of the issues you've described.

Sorry Pieta don't handle active addiction cases AFAIK.

Peter McVerry is a good alternative for advice professional on the addiction route https://www.pmvtrust.ie/our-services/drug-treatment-services/

Do they? Is this an ad for Pieta House? Let me see some evidence.

    Do they provide PSYCHIATRISTS?

Do you know what a psychiatrist is?

Is this an ad for Pieta House? Again, please provide evidence. If there is no evidence, please do not recommend a specific organisation. JC

Again, do you have access to evidence for this particular organisation's efficacy? If there is no evidence, please do not recommend a specific organisation. JC

The OP asked for a PSYCHIATRIST recommendation. If any of you had bothered to read the the Forum Charter, you would see that we do not and can not provide recommendations for individual practitioners. JC

What we can do, is inform the OP about how to find a psychiatrist. That is, get the GP to refer the person to a psychiatrist working in the drug and alcohol services. This can be locally to the HSE mental health/addiction service, or through the private services, either hospital/residential or private psychiatrist.

Pieta house don't work with addiction, Mcverry Trust are more geared towards homelessness! The HSE Addiction Service in your local area is best bet.

Unsure if psych is right service, unfortunately they may see the suicide ideation as coming from addiction , which may be the case (assessment will be first step) so they will want that treated first

There will be a psyc as well as counsellors in the HSE Addiction Service

Well done on reaching out to help your friend . Addiction and mental wellbeing and which to look at first is the ongoing question of many organisations . Do you need to be sober to completely engage with services or does the substamce keep you alive in order to start the journey etc ... May I suggest your friends GP maybe a good starting point . It would be unfair of me to suggest one service over the other (on sick leave from addiction services ) however here are a few possibilities .

If you do not mind I will share a few Limerick ones

    Saoirse Addiction Centre
    Slainte Drug and Alcohol services
    Merchants Quay Ireland
Local day hospitals such as Tevere , st annes , willowdale
    dualdiagnosis.ie

In relation to mental well being every psychiatrist /psychologist will work in a different way however it is important that they are accredited

Also please know that if your friend reaches crisis point their is crisis services available through university hospital Limerick . If you need any of the Dublin servives please feel free to ask Im just roughly remembering Limerick ones

Indeed, a bit of a 'JC' complex indeed! I see the word 'suicide' and that kinda trumps all else. Rash to recommend Pieta alright and PMVT is predominantly homeless oriented alright but does have a dedicated addiction service, hence the apology and correction.

I'm not an expert on these issues but keen to send the OP in the direction of someone who can advise better on such issues rather than straight to a psychiatrist seeing as it's probably not the most subtle route for the individual to be exposed to.

    Luketitz, Split, miketheDIYman, Veloce:

If you would all look at the STICKY threads, you will find there one called How to Find Help/ Therapist/Counsellor/psychologist

You will also find one entitled Charter for the Psychology Forum PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING.

Please familiarise yourselves with these and you will gain an understanding of why I am on the "warpath". JC

  • St Patrick’s Hospital in Dublin offers the gamut of in-patient and video consultations by a team of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists etc. they can treat addiction and especially if complicated by clinical depression and co-morbidities. You can self-refer or have a chat with them initially by phone to see how they could help.

A few years' back I went out with a psych nurse who worked in that gaff, she hated it, couldn't wait to get out. I asked was it due the patients, she said nah patients were largely sound, it was the psychiatrists and the stultifying bureaucracy that did her nut in.

Stay away from there. They love diagnosing everybody as bipolar too.

Costs a lot and does more harm.
