It's hard to believe that a newspaper article now can be based on a phone call to a radio show.

I mean that could be a totally made up story??

    The Indo & journalism! LOL.
A contradiction in terms to be more precise.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,793 ✭✭✭Red Kev

The Indo lost all credibility years ago. Once the Irish Press was gone, it had no real competitor; the Irish Times is still considered too highbrow for many and the Examiner is considered too regional based.

The rise of the tabloids here over he past 20 years, took some of the readers from the Indo and to combat that, they decided to go downmarket. So we now have the biggest selling paper in the country being not much more than the equivalent of the Daily Mail in terms of journalistic quality. Sad really.
Won't matter to the Indo, all libel from anything dodgy will rest with RTÉ as the original broadcaster.

Nope. Repeating a defamatory remark is still defamation, so they can be sued as well if they repeat it and it isn't true.

I thought that. And RTE are not actually broadcasting it as fact if it's just a conversation.

It still doesn't matter, RTE are liable as they are the medium through which the defamation is made. One very well known case a few years ago was Mary Harney being called an alcoholic by Nell McCafferty on Newstalk, Harney sued Newstalk and won €450,000.

Now she could have sued McCafferty, but obviously Newstalk would have the ready cash to pay her out.

Newstalk, in turn could have sued McCafferty, but they didn't because she either doesn't have the means, and/or it's bad publicity.

Tries to immigrate to Ireland, gets rejected and her first step is to ring Joe Duffy. She clearly has naturalized already.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,793 ✭✭✭Red Kev

Obvious from the off how far Joe has his tongue buried in her wotsit. Rich old lady? That's right up his fawning alley.

There's more to this than meets the eye, bits of the story are slowly coming out. One extension after another isn't the way to do it.

She should go back to the States and do the process properly. But she's dirtied her bib now.

Joe getting more biased as the show goes on.

I suspect the alarm bells started ringing in some Dublin office when the cardiac problems were brought up.
"Oh, bejeezus, she's going to need some medical attention. Right so, out with her."

Someone arriving by ferry from France doesn't exactly project a wealthy image of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, their means would be perceived as low so to speak.

Perhaps Enda has a plan...50,000 American oldies can stay in the old sod for President Trump allowing 50 thou. Irish illegals staying in dear old Americay.

It rains almost as much as Galway in WA.

Last time I was on the Cherbourg ferry there were 5 Ferraris on it from some German club. Most expensive was supposedly worth €600,000. Cheapest well over €150,000.

    She's hiding something.
