uk ferry cycling holiday

    Hi all,
    Was thinking of taking the bike on the ferry to the uk for about 5days or so, cycle off and do a bit of a tour,i could hapilly go to holyhead or fishgard,whichever has most scenery ect. Did any1ever do this and could recomend a route? Id be happy averaging 90km per day.
    Also must you book your bile on the ferry or can you just roll up? Thank you!

    Holyhead would probably require you to go quite a way inland which can be very scenic but is also going to be very hilly as you go through the Snowdonia area(the main north Wales route, the A55 to Chester, bars cyclists in places, and you would probably be better off heading down the west coast or inland via the A5)

    South Wales is possibly a bit more bland and built up, but will have easier/better/less hilly roads (as well as more traffic) Again though you could head back up the coast or inland towards the hillier areas.

    You can just roll up. I recommend a sail and rail, and head inland by train first. Look for Welsh Audax routes for ideas where to head, Some wonderful scenery in Wales, stay away from A roads.

    Great roads and scenery around North Wales (I'm originally from there, so obviously biased!). So easy to get to also.

    If arriving in Holyhead you'll have most of Anglesey at your disposal. A lap of the island is approx 100km or so all along the coast.

    I'd highly recommend going towards Snowdonia area though, as Beasty mentioned above. Places like Betws-Y-Coed, Llanberis etc. are usually teaming with cyclists.

    If you want suggestions for routes, look at one of the 3 events Always Aim High put on (Gran Fondo Conwy / Etape Eryri / Tour De Mon - http://alwaysaimhighevents.com/) that should give you a bit of an idea, but happy to put a few routes on Strava for you if you like.

    I cycled through Betws-Y-Coed years ago. Would really recommend it.

    I think that there's a cycle route along the north coast though? http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/route-5 is a link to the route from Holyhead all the way to Reading. You could think about cycling towards England and getting a train back to Holyhead then.

    Alternatively if you started in Fishguard and rode towards Holyhead you could decide towards the end of your trip whether you fancied any climbs in Snowdonia with a few days in your legs.
