For tomorrow, a press release will suffice.

The Minister can turn up when the project is finished.

WLR is a parade of local reps chipping in! Fair enough it's a big deal for us all. The moving of Plunkett Station was confirmed for the transport hub.

I’m absolutely buzzing! This will revolutionise the city and will create lots of opportunities for decent employment both directly and indirectly. The city will also be the place to be every summer!

Hopefully it gives everyone in the hospitality sector a bit of hope to get through these difficult times.

Brilliant news.... sucess has many fathers .... this is a massive achievement from Waterford Council- particularly Michael Walsh, Niall Harrington and Rob Cass. I am particularly struck by the braveness of the Council in puling this off. It is also a massive political achievement from a league of politicans from Paudie Coffey who designated the SDZ, John Cummins- neither of who could get it picked up nationally, but did keep it alive in Waterford; before Mary Butler and Marc Ó Cathasaigh were able to get it approved at cabinet.

This is a huge stimulus for the region, and taken together with other needed state investments could see the SE grow at tiger rates to eventually catch up with the State's (Covid-aside) roaring economy.

What are the next steps then? Contractors to be appointed? Commencement notices, etc? Has any indication been given as to when construction is likely to begin?

Has detailed design been progressed? Tender process for the construction contract? If not it'll still be a while before boots are on the ground (aside from the advance contract boots!)

Who is Niall Harrington, haven't heard his name mentioned before..........Cummins seems to be getting the lions share of the credit.........he will definitely become a TD now in next election...........?

Yes, that bit I don't know... I know that the planning is fully approved, so that level of design has been committed to paper. Maybe someone here knows how far along they are with the detailed design and tender.

Had to laugh listening to WLR, in fairness most were delighted, but always a few, same ones will travel to Dublin or Cork or go online for their shopping, then moan that the City is dying a death and gets overlooked.

This is a landmark day for the city and the region! It's fantastic to see the government commit funding for this (finally). Well done to Rob Cass and the council who have put in a huge amount of work to get to where we are. I cannot wait to see cranes on the North Quay and see this take shape, it really is going to be a game changer for Waterford...

Great news for the county and wider south-east.

Infrastructure projects are exactly what we need to help the economy recover post-Covid.

Congratulations to Rob Cass and Council on their achievements thus far.

I look forward to seeing the completion of this development in due course.

    Great news!

Why does Waterford need a 17-floor apartment block and another cinema.

  • Registered Users Posts: 582 ✭✭✭batman75

The danger is the existing commercial building stock on the south side of the river becomes even more vacant and the centre of the town moves north of the river. Instead of new build it would have made more sense to make use of existing structures rather than simply moving the epicentre of retail trade in the town centre.

this simply isnt possible, as 'the rising tide, lifts all boats'!

astonishing achievement though, best of luck to all those involved

Sure the Quay has been dying years and will continue to do so without this development. We can't just pause and wait for existing businesses to get it together. Maybe some stern competition across the river will bring about improvements on the South Quays, or maybe not but if that's the case it was doomed to failure eventually in any case, and development just expedited the demise.
