I thought it was all going - that entire block with a new car park just behind/below the old Art Dept building

I do remember there being a car park there, but that was the old plans. I'm not sure about the scaled back plans. Maybe it's still there, but there is certainly some sort of car park as part of it.

If the carpark is being levelled presumably a replacement is being built first.

Isnt that car park getting tore down and another being rebuilt by the old WIT building.

Edit: just seen you have already mentioned that.

Actually think bricks and mortar shopping has a very uncertain future.

If you had been in Kildare Village at the weekend you wouldn't be saying that.

Destination Shopping like the NQs will still bring in the crowds.

What niche would the north quays have as a destination? Just saying as Kildare has up to 40% on premium brands year round with an extra 20% off the week just gone and in may also.

M&S would be a superb addition the city. Yes they are rather expensive but their food offerings are excellent and of superior quality. Their mens' suits in their clothes dept are top notch too.

M&S opening here would be a big vote of confidence for Waterford.

The Celtic tiger largely passed the city by, but now real changes are happening that could see ths city become the urban hub and engine of growth for the South east that it was always supposed to be. Roll on the development! It can't happen a minute too soon.

If they come fantastic great boost for the time. If people don't think they are any good then shop elsewhere.

So much work 'appears' to have been done here but in reality it counts for nothing! We'll watch tentatively to see what happens but hopefully the outcome will be a successful one for Waterford!

Thanks for that pearl of idiocy.

Thanks for that pearl of idiocy.

They are not wrong. There has been many false dawns for the city. It explains pessimism.

Thanks for that pearl of idiocy.

    Glad you recognised it Harry!

There's always plenty of room for more shoppers within the M50 if it goes south!

We love seeing all the country folk spending their hard earned cash in the Big Smoke! Bring 'em all up here I say!!!!

Oh dear God! I'll never get to heaven!

It's got nothing to do with that - the billion euro toilet flush is for small towns in the sticks, not supporting major infrastructure developments

Honestly it's a total waste of money taken as a whole, even though you can make cases for plenty of individual cases. The slide from the country to larger urban areas will not be stopped by a library getting refurbished or a pedestrian bridge over a road built.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,745 ✭✭✭Deiseen

€6 million allocated for the pedestrian bridge.

Yay! Six million eh? Pushing the boat out there.

Deise AM is talking out this now.

David Cullinan saying good as far as it goes notes it's a 100m ask in total and that the initial ask was for 13m and they only got half which is worrying.

    Michael Walsh coming on soon.

They always add a bit on to these requests in the knowledge that nobody ever gets the full amount requested.

Any companies state in interest in locating? It would be ideal for your IT or finance type offices.

But the whole plan requires 100m so on a pro-rata basis they'll get about 45m!

As I said above Michael Walsh will be on so he better have something worth saying about the public funding aspect.

edit- WLR news says 20m was sought.

There should be a bigger up roar about this, it's disgraceful. Mary Butler's statement is laughable too, blaming the government. She not realise her party is basically keeping the government afloat. Halligan is shocking too. They are all quick to show their disappointment when something goes against them but where were they when they needed to be lobbying the people responsible for this? Coffey in fairness to him has been front and centre through all this.

If this doesn't go ahead I really hope the Waterford people and it's surrounds will have this in their mind when election day comes. This has the ability to change Waterford forever. If it doesn't happen Waterford will be firmly left in the doldrums

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,777 ✭✭✭Bards

So with only 6m eur committed funding is this project now dead in the water?

No it'll be fine but it'll be fine despite the gubberment's lack of active interest. Someone really does need to have a word in their shell-like about perception.
