Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where do you get hitched (civil ceremony) in Athlone

Where is the registry office in Athlone? I know if I want to give notice of getting married, the office is in the primary care centre in Clonbrusk, but I doubt people actually get hitched in there, do they? Just to be clear, I'm interested in just tying the knot, no fanciness, so I'm not planning on getting the ceremony done in a hotel or venue of any kind. I'd rather it wasn't some soulless room in Clonbrusk though!

Could be the court house? Id give them a call and ask or call the Citizens Information centre http://centres.citizensinformation.ie/centre.php?cic=Athlone+CIC

It's out in Clonbrusk. Only know this as my cousin is getting married and is having the ceremony and reception in the same venue as he didn't want to have the ceremony in an office.

I don't either. But I don't want a fuss or a "do" either. Hmm, what to do...

Civil Registration Service, Primary Care Centre, Clonbrusk, Athlone, Co. Westmeath
Opening Hours: Tues 9:00-4:00 (open through lunch); Wed/Thurs/Fri 9:00-12.30
    Contact: 09064 24601 & 09064 24884

Why on earth is the registry office run by the HSE in a Primary Care centre? In case your mother-in-law has heart failure that you're not at a church?

What other organisation / building would you prefer it in, the Tax Office? Social Welfare? Genuine question, not taking a dig at you.

My wife and I went with a civil ceremony, I'd understand not wanting it in the Primary Care Centre, but at the end of the day you're signing a piece of paper, why would they supply a fancy room just for that?

We went with the Shamrock Lodge, you can rent out one of their function rooms and decorate it if you want. I know you said you didn't want to do it in a venue, but that's your only other option.
They're approved for civil ceremonies, you pay the registrar extra to call out to it.

Yeah, it's just because we're not having a do, so there's no point in booking the Shamrock or someplace like that (although I might price it just out of curiosity). I'll probably go for the primary care centre. It's just a shame there isn't something like an old town hall in town where the civil ceremonies were carried out, then the room would have a bit more character just by virtue of being old.

I've found out Clonbrusk has a no frills room that seats about 12.

But I'm not having a do. Just getting hitched, then a bit to eat with immediate family, then a few pints. There's surely no point in getting a hotel in that scenario. I don't know what it costs, but I'd imagine too much.

It's good you can do it in Clonbrusk. I was thinking I might have to go out to Roscommon.

That's what we had originally planned, just a meal with the family after the ceremony, which the hotel was willing to do. Ended up going the whole hog in the end :P
You don't need to book the hotel for a "Wedding" you can just rent out the room.

If someone had asked me to guess where civil weddings happen, I would have guessed the Town Hall or the Courts.

I would not have guessed the railway station, dog pound, town Marina or Primary Care Centre.

All of those places would be more scenic than the Primary Care Centre! Well, maybe not the dog pound.

You should tell them it's for a wedding at some point early on though. Many hotels sign contracts with brides that limit them to one wedding a day. If there's another wedding happening on the day you could find yourself without somewhere to eat at the last minute.

Not Athlone, but you can also have civil ceremonies in Viewmount House in Longford and Hannons Hotel in Roscommon.

One thing to remember though is that the registrar is a civil servant and works 9-5 so the bride better not be late cos they don't get overtime :pac:

Have either of you got any Army connections? One of the Messes in the Barracks in Athlone is lovely and any functions I've been to in the Barracks the food has been good, not "wedding-y" it's usually chicken curry, beef stroganoff, but very tasty.

Surely if you can get a registrar to come to a hotel or building like that you could just as easily get them to come along to your front room and do it there if it's "no frills" you're looking for?

    That's against the law.

Got married in the Sligo registry office in 2014, then held a small reception in the Glass House afterwards. Didn't have to pay for entertainment, as it was Christmas Party season :D

No, we don't. It's a good suggestion though. I'm from Limerick, and my sister got one of her kids christened in the barracks chapel in Limerick and had the do in the pub there. It was a surprisingly lovely place for a ceremony and do.
