The Life of Sparky the e-Golf

The fact that VW last month failed to secure Cobalt supplier for their proposed battery factory might somewhat affect the ability of them to do a massive EV rollout anytime near future. What VAG tried to do is to secure a guaranteed supply at 40 percent below the market rate and to their surprise nobody bit their hand off.

However, low Co battery chemistries are starting to appear so maybe that will be the saving grace. But any "2020" projections will be out the window if the manufactures can't buy either cells or raw materials to make their own.

    That's true

No VW EV talk till 2020 is probably best

They are just trolling with those annoying concepts

    No point discussing pricing......

Ok so nearly have Sparky 12 months. The car is perfect and I think the Misses loves it more, moving to electric was always a big issue for her but now she would move the Galaxy if a large 7 seater was available....

Anyway as normal with me I am getting itchy feet :-)

So at the moment I am looking at the following
    1. New 181 eGolf, have offer from dealer over the phone but nothing concrete yet. Would be on PCP so I get some cash back. Going to try hit garage once I am back in Ireland
    2. I3 REX, ballpark of 6 k to swap into older model
    3. Ioniq, would not buy new, a few demo models knocking around and Phil potentially has an orange one :-) Just so I can be different
    4. Demo model eGolf, this is less looked at option as I just seen on carzone they have one coming in.....

At the moment nothing else of interest out there.

Also option 5 is hold onto current eGolf, save the cash and then swap for ID model but that will be 2020 so very far away for me.....my max is normally 2 years to keep a car......normally 18 months or so.....

The Orange Ioniq looks lovely. It would be a UK model, so make sure it’s the top spec one....with leather seats.

My preference would be to go back to leather if possible...had it in A6 and great with the kids

Noticed that post by Phil on Facebook about the Ioniq.

I think the colour is horrendous though! Plus for less than that price you could probably get an ex demo 40kwh Leaf in a year's time.

    No interest in Leaf

A couple of the Ioniq around, a guy posted about EP Mooney having a black one but something seems a bit dodgy on that.....not on carzone/EPMooney website.....when I contacted the sales guy he wouldn’t give me list price and just wants me to call into garage.....

A few more knocking around on carzone....

Just to understand your requirements, the motivation is just to have a change? It doesn't necessarily have to be a better car. Would that be a fair statement?

With your love of the eGolf I don't think anything other than the newer version eGolf will satisfy your itch! :)

You have a similar scenario to me with one EV and one 7 seater.
I think my next move isn't to upgrade the EV but to get rid of the 7 seater and get into an SUV/crossover EV (or PHEV) and get as close to a 2 EV house as possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,679 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

I don't give a hoot about brand, it's all about range and price.

The 40kwh Leaf should give about 30-40 miles more than the Ioniq and would probably cost less.

    Easy decision for me.

That said I wish Hyundai would solve their battery supply issues and bring out a 40kwh+ model. That would seriously tempt me, although the CCS blackspot in the North West will be a problem unless eCars ever start upgrading.

Based on my own experience and requirements I’d go for an i3 Rex if I could.
Based on your case - you are not in a rush to change the Golf for anything that’s better :)
Keep you cash and get the right car in a year or two, I’d say :)

If I do change anything I get will have additional range which I won’t turn down. Maybe leather seats as mentioned but those are not really requirements to change the car...more nice to have’s if I do swap

The 7 seater I swapped in August last year, went for a Galaxy. I looked at Hybrid/Electric and nothing out that would meet the requirements and nothing in pipeline. The space in Galaxy is requirement for driving holidays to UK/France so that will be driven for another few years as it is the work horse.

Not many threads on eGolf so will provide a quick update. As per last post I kept Sparky, the potential replacement was a 181 eGolf which was in Cork.

So have the car now 400 days. I have done 18,364km in it. I am circa 17kWh/100km, which to be fair is decent as I don't drive conservative at all.

As it happens yesterday I was doing standard driving, after getting into work I noticed I was running ar 12kWh/100km. So I decided for the rest of the day I would drive a little conservative, not a granny or anything but reasonable.

So I ended up at 12.3kWh/100km and 120km done with a good 45km left on the guesstimator. The guesstimator is very good on eGolf.

Based on that I should be able to get 160km per charge. Which would be similar to what other drivers are seeing.

I think that is extremely good. If you consider the eGolf is not developed from the ground up as electric car so not as streamlined as the Ioniq.

    I was a little surprised.

Apart from that the car really is a pleasure to drive. That's when I get my hands on it because my wife loves it.

That's very good going Shef! Would be interesting to test an eGolf against a similar age LEAF for a real life range. Based on your numbers the VW would have at least 20 km more of range per charge.

A lot of stuff gets posted on eGolf forum but then again it is on eGolf forum so it has a little bit of a swing towards the VW

They are saying the battery degradation on eGolf is not anything like what is seen on Leaf, I have no idea because eGolf has nothing like Leafspy. You need to bring to dealer and ask them to analyze.

The eGolf as well is listed as 26kWh battery which sits in between the 24kWh and 30kWh Leaf. So really you would need to compare to the 30kWh, but will the Leaf have automatic advantage as bigger battery?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

An interesting conversation on one of the forums. A Swedish drivers tested battery when leaving VW, was reporting 96%

Has done 85,000km and ran report. Still at 96%

No battery degradation to affect the range. The thoughts are VW are putting in more "padding" so it will take longer before the degradation on the battery will start to affect the range......interesting concept if true.....

    Latest upgrade to eGolf....

Very impressive system. It will be interesting to see how long the kids will last in it....going to friends at weekend who has older so might need to do a couple of age tests:p

It's a Multimac. Great product, but I guess those 4 kids will outgrow the tiny backseat of a Golf very quickly :p

It will do for a few years :P

Longer term I might swap for the Superclub 3 seater option. It is larger seats so would make more sense.

I just got the chance to buy this second hand so took the oppurtunity.

3-4 years now I have been talkign about this system so it was worth it to see if it works.....

I already have 3 people asking about buying it from me :p:p

As unkel said it is the Multimac system. Like Gold dust to buy second hand. I got with all the extras(so 2 baby inserts) 4 head rest attachments etc....I couldn't pass up the opportunity

Really the seats are great, my pups always are taking their hand out of axiss and other car seats I have, in this they can't...they are well strapped in

Does it come with an optional roof box which would be essential to carry the extra luggage associated with lugging 4 kids around!!

    No roof box required....

Ford Galaxy is used if large quantities of crap and kitchen sink are required:P

Interesting device. Sister was looking at one but had issues with insurance where capacity (6)exceeded log book capacity of the car (5).

How does your insurance work? Are you limited to leaving the front passenger seat empty to not breach the log book capacity of 5?

Yes, I too would want confirmation in writing / email from my insurance company that I was allowed to use a Multimac and would be fully insured. Obviously it turns the car into a 6 seater (you wouldn't need a 4 child multimac if you had one child in the front and 3 in the back)

But I really like the idea of the Multimac, so that you can use a normal car as your family car, even with 4 kids. And not one of those horrible 7 seater MPVs - I'd rather stick my manly bits in a grinder than own one of those :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

RE insurance. My current policy will cover but only for 3 children. It is up in 3 weeks so the agent already said they deal with 12 other companies and are sure they will find someone to insure for 4....

Only 3 is not an issue as that is all I want to cover anyway....

I am going to check over the next few weeks and will update on who do and don't

I have asked mobility ireland for some companies as they install as well

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

Ok, so far Axa and 123.ie have no issue with the car seat. 123 did ask for confirmation I wouldn't have over 8 in car :-)

It didn't actually put up the policy at all. I do need to show proof the seat is installed by professional company or they will not cover

Will you post the pictures / video of the experience when your kids grow out of the multimac!!

To be fair I'd much prefer the look of my s-max compared to pre-2018 Leaf I also have! Its also not bad to drive which is a bonus.

So Sparky is gone....well nearly! off to his new home with lovely owners who will look after him well...

Fantastic car and outlived the majority of my cars. Unfortunate for him he was bought by an owner who has no loyalty :-)

Don’t envy you there at all!!!

Can I ask why you sold the golf? Not enough room with kids? My two are teenagers so I need something to bring 4 “adult” sized people, that’s why I want to get a golf instead of a Zoe.

Car was perfect, plenty of space and the range I required. I loved the car, wife loved it....

Considering one of these eGolfs around 2015 era.

Would the battery life be still ok? How long are batteries supposed to last? I know it depends on use but rough idea....

I am up to 80k km's and I have seen no degradation, now I did try to get VW to run a battery test but they said it was impossible. In other countries they can soI just think it is lack of training in the garage.....

Some case in US which have worse conditions than Ireland(hot/cold) of over 80k miles and battery still reading the same as when it left the plant.

Nissan have issues with the early Leaf, maybe some high mileage Leaf 1.5 but no reports I have seen in the World of high degradation on the eGolf...

I'm just 4 months into my 2019 eGolf ownership and i'm loving it! Great little car!

Such a shame that they are discontinuing it for the new concept type models, but it might make a comeback at some stage.
