Bourkes on Catherine Street is another one that is probably too soon! It was a great spot though and would be booming now with Uber across the road.

I like what they've done there, with it now going by the name Mother Mac's. Seems to be balancing the feel of a good traditional local pub with the music/craft/arty/hipster scenes.

Any one remember Gallaghers next to Squire McGuires on Lower Cecil St? Must be closed 15 years at least.

Wicked Chicken for great DJs and candle-lit pints, then around the back stairs to get through to live music in Baker Place, and eventually downstairs for the "nightclub" in the Underground (with all kinds of exotic smells drifting in from the smoking area, and endless supplies of local concert posters from the bathroom corridor ;) ) What a spot.

Was before my time (think it closed down the year I started in UL), but always heard great things about it! Why did it close? Was it simply a case of lack of business?

Yes. It was called Bill Clinton's at one stage, back in 1998.

Schooner's, down at Steamboat Quay. Get there before the door-staff started at 8:00 and there was no need to worry about I.D. :pac:

I think the recession did most of the damage. Pre-drinking getting more and more popular probably didn't help either.
The whole place shut down for a while, then the Chicken re-opened, then one day they posted "Gone fishing" on their Facebook page and it never opened again!

Yeah the Tav is still going. Haven't been inside for years though.

I think about 16 years since I was in there. Was there a pub called Flamingos on the corner of William Street and Little Catherine Street?

    JD's on Catherine Street

The Steering Wheel (Roxborough Shopping Centre) and the adjoining amusement arcade were both owned by the Collins family. It was the location of the shooting dead of Roy Collins by the Dundon mob.

I was going to nominate Feathery Burkes but another poster got there before me.

So I nominate Hanratty's instead (Glentworth St).

Is the Sports Bar still open (in O'Connell St)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭Scar001

The Sportsman Inn on Roches Street.
The Old Tom (Cornstore) with a long basement
The Shakespeare on Ellen Street I think.
Joe Malones already mentioned and became Denis Clearys.
The Granary and disco can't remember name but was inside main building.
Moby Dicks on Dock Road beside Dolans.
The Grand Mariner on Catherine Street.

Termights and The Globe are my two. I was walking passed the globe just yesterday and thinking its such a waste of a building in such a prime spot.

I think the Globe became a strip club for a while. Also, if you are allowed to mention termights then I will come counter with the temple of sound. Above the highschool this place was a bit mental.
