Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Im in Leaving Cert year and was hoping to be studying Criminal Justice in UL next year. I've always wanted to be guard, but I'm not so sure anymore. I love challenges and I know for sure I want to help people as a career. However I can see the atmosphere looks pretty tense and the job to be very serious and strenuous. I'm aware it's a serious job but I'm an enthusiastic person, always (maybe overly) happy, and I've a good buzz for life. I'm afraid this career might ruin that? It just seems a bit.. depressing?

How about the Military Police? Get your Law degree and go in as a Cadet.

Personally with all the scandals, the sh*t pay, the abysmal conditions and the general air of unease at which people treat Gardai, I would not go for it.

There's always jobs like paramedic, fire fighter, social care ect. where you're constantly helping people.

Less sh*t pay then. For all they have to deal with on a daily basis, I still wouldn't go for it.

Plenty of my friends are Gardai and for them it's a vocation more than a job, so if you're that kinda person then by all means go for it.

Yeah basically what your seeing now with all these scandals is the end product years of cutbacks in AGS. Fact is that if AGS didn't have the resources or the over time to do their job properly what do you expect. Thankfully now investment is being put into the force and the starting salary is competitive. I'm finished college myself in May and you I would be lucky to get 28k plus allowences as a starting salary in any of the graduate jobs I've seen. Also if you go in with a degree you jump three increments in pay so you would be talking about an increase of 10k in your pay after 2 years served.

AGS is going through one of the many ups and downs but you need to stay positive knowing that the large majority of the force had nothing to do with recent scandals. Every job has a few bad apples. My advice would be to keep all options open and finish your degree. That way if you don't like the job you have your degree to fall back on. Hope this helps you with your decision and best of luck.

Why do people keep on referring to it as a pay-rise? No-body got a pay rise and I am open to correction, it was pay restoration not a pay-rise, just like the politicians have done with there pay.

The 4K isn't linked to core pay either, so the core pay hasn't gone up or down it's remaining the same. The 4k can be easily removed unlike pay restoration linked to core pay.

You 're over thinking things op and our dreadful educational system isn't helping things either. Chose whatever area you find interesting, don't worry about the job or career after the fact, the world constantly changes as do you, in a couple of years time your wishes and interests may have completely changed, and that's perfectly fine. Even after college or whatever you decide to do, you still want to be a guard, so be it, just make sure you enjoy what you're doing. Most important, enjoy life and your 'buzz'. Best of luck
