Heading down to Galway next weekend with a few lads and we are looking for a nice 3 hour walk before going for a few refreshments afterwards? Looking at Portumna Woods at the moment ? Is there any other good walk in Co Galway that someone could recommend? Would prefer somewhere on the east of Galway, rather than having to drive an hour or so past Galway out to Connemara etc.
    Thanks for the help

Merlin Woods (city), Coole Park(north of Gort) and Renville(near Oranmore) are all nice

Coole Park in Gort, more a walk than a hike tho but you could easily walk 2hrs or more there

Bunch of walks here with info

Most are west of city but check it out for the ones to the east

Head for Kinvara, there are beautiful hill walks along the coast, can spend as long as you want walking in the Burren, then only 40 mins for Galway in the evening, or plenty of local options in the village.

Thanks, had a look at these, they are all quite short though the ones to the east of Galway. Thanks to ye all for your time anyway

There's more paths than you might imagine in Merlin Woods. I GPS-mapped them for openstreetmap

Depending on how you are driving up to Galway maybe this 7km walk in Offaly is good

How about the Flaggy Shore at Newquay? Possible route here

Park at the beach, nice walk along the coastline to the Martello tower, head back along the road (there's an ice cream place half a mile on) and go as far as Linnane's pub for creamy Guinness and great seafood, then a 5 min stroll back to the car.

That's just one of many great walking loops all along the Slieve Blooms. Wwll worth a wander if you're on holidays.
