    A mid range pc.
Your top of the range pc still blows the Scorpio out of the water. I reckon it will be at least €599

That's not what I took from the video. He specifically says it's not far off PC standard, for various different technical reasons (which I won't regurgitate) other than your usual PC specs.

We're all obviously waiting on price, but if this gets me almost PC standard at €500 then they have changed the industry forever.

Do you think there'll be much sales for this?

Depends on price but I think it could do well enough, I've 5 friends who went from 360 -> PS4 who are now planning on coming back for Scorpio.

Long enough since PS4 came out, could tempt a lot of those who switched platform back to Xbox now that there's a powerful console and the games library has expanded

Pretty sweet specs for a console alright. Wonder will they bundle an Elite controller with it, beastly combo. I'm guessing the same kind of folks who felt the need to upgrade from PS4 to Pro will buy into Scorpio - it's something new and shiny and better.

Microsoft need to pull the finger out and get some exclusives for the console though, PS4 is wiping the floor with it in that regard. Has there been any decent exclusives released for it this year? It just seems to be 360 game X is now backwards compatible.

Halo Wars 2 was the only one I can think of, but probably only appealed to fans of the original. Sea of Thieves is brilliant according to anyone who's played the closed alpha but that's about all that.s coming that I'm aware of(being released on PC too though so not technically exclusive).

Regards price, I don't see it being more than 500, I presume they're using the tech they are to keep the price down to affordable(ish) levels.

I'd hope Red Dead Redemption 2 runs/looks better on Scorpio than PS Pro it could be a massive seller.

Well i hope it runs better. I can't wait for that game.

I was going to pick up an One S,for the back catalogue and Games for Gold etc,but i reckon i might pick one of these up,i think developers would be stupid not to take advantage of the hardware, just like they did with PS4/Pro..

It would be nice now if Player Unknown Battlegrounds gets released on the Preview progam in around the time for the Scorpio drops.

From the Eurogamer article: "The final form factor - the 'ID' as Microsoft calls it - will be revealed at E3, where we suspect you will be pleasantly surprised." I think it'd be cool if they somehow fit it into the same exact form factor as the Xbox One S but in black.

RE Dunworth1's post about Microsoft showing their hand to Sony; Sony were completely blindsided last year when Xbox revealed the S and announced the Scorpio at E3. Up until a week before E3, Sony were all set to unveil the PS4 Pro (or Neo at the time). It'd be in very bad faith for them to show off a Scorpio-beater 7 months after releasing their own mid-gen iteration.

I definitely prefer how they handled this reveal to any other alternative. Unveiling everything at once at E3 would be far too much information in the short amount of time allowed and uninteresting to a regular consumer doesn't care about specs other than how funny a word Teraflops is. Alternatively, doing what Playstation did at the "Press Meeting" last September where Mark Cerny showed quiet journalists how pretty HDR and 4K look while people streaming at home watched on 1080p TVs. And that's without going into any specs at all, and failing to mention VR once despite the PSVR releasing 4 weeks after.

Coming straight out with specs to Digital Foundry, authoritative specialists in hardware reviews was a ballsy and confident move. They've previously hosted special reveal events for the 360 and XB1 in May so I'd expect the same this year and then to continue their run of focusing on games at E3.

    +1

MS kinda destroyed it's reputation with the X1 in terms of being up front with tech specs. All the talk about the 'power of the cloud' etc. to try and mask what was an ill conceived, over priced and underpowered console that has been (justifiably) trounced by a focused, more powerful and (initially) cheaper console.

Sony's focus on horsepower and shock move of putting 8GBs of GDDR5 ram in (when it seemed MS expected to counter their faster ram with quantity of ram) along with MS' decision to atrophy the main console in order to boost it's tv credentials was a game changer.

This is a canny and calculated way at winning back that high ground. Ending any fanboy debates over pure power as step 1 and then wowing them with games as step 2.

    They'll achieve step 1 handily.

It's step 2 that looks bolloxed.

It's a killer seeing PS exclusive after PS exclusive on ads on tv (as an X1 owner) and to have multi platform titles like Destiny continue to lavish the PS with additional content.

This was well orchestrated by Microsoft. The PS4 Pro press conference was a surprisingly dull affair, dry numbers and not much pizzazz. Lots of different press and online outlets watching and taking bits and pieces from it so it took some time to put the info all back together into something coherent.

MS have given one source, Digital Foundry, access several months before release. DF has made a name for itself for getting into the nitty-gritty of stats, pixel counting and FPS and had previously been critical of the underpowered Xbox One (although full of praise for the One S modest spec boost and especially the Back Compat feature).

All other press sources can only really quote or link back to information that comes from Digital Foundry.

It shows confidence to do that this far from official release (Digital Playground let press and streamers access to Forza Horizon 2 very early because they knew they had something good).

It gets a very positive spin out on the Scorpio before it's even officially revealed. Then Microsoft can do a hardware and name reveal, if they want, about E3 and then E3 can be about Games, Games, Games.

--- On the hardware side, they did say that all the ports on the back of the Scorpio directly match up to the One S, so we could hopefully be looking at a similar sized box.

It's telling when someone like me (10+ years on xbox) went out and bought a ps4 last month for the exclusives. They are genuinely games I want to play.

I was getting by in indies but sometimes you want a AAA 3 course meal not a snack. The only thing Xbox have this year that interests me is State Of Decay, I can see Crackdown getting rushed out the door and being little better than the last game which had fun gameplay but poor and extremely repetitive missions , and I've no interest in sea of thieves. Even if they have stuff up their selves for E3 not much of that will be available this year.

To counter that though there has definitely been a decline in the number of AAA games this gen so maybe the exclusives are starting to stand out more.

With the Scorpio tech revealed, what's the ultimate 4K HDR tv?

I've been looking online and can't get a clear answer from anywhere. I've read that QLED is better for HDR whereas OLED is the future but not as good with HDR.

I really have no idea. It's something I want to purchase this year. Does anyone have any recommendations?

It's not something I'm buying today so a budget doesn't matter.

Basically, what is the best set to cater for 4K HDR gaming.

(Apologies if there is a specific thread for this already - I couldn't find it).

I would ask firstly how much you are willing to spend?

There is a thread where we have been discussing 4K TVs for gaming. There are also posts there mentioning deals and making recommendations.

Fupping Samsung muddying the waters even more for the consumer. I've developed a real distaste for them of late. QLED is a marketing gimmick, they've just rebranded last years Quantum-dot feature as QLED - it's still just a LED telly (still edge lit with crap dimming), even though they're charging a ridiculous price for the new models. Have a look at the rtings.com review - 2 units tested didn't live up to the advertised specs for brightness.

OLEDs can't go as bright for HDR but they're going to be better all-rounders. Main issues are the price and screen burn potential - I've not seen how long it takes for an image to burn in.

I personally will be keeping an eye on the below Sony model to see how the price is looking towards the end of the year/early next

back in 2013 if Sony had gone first it would have been a different story today as Sony were planning almost the same type of drm etc. and had time to scramble and change which the Xbox announced.

Have you got a source for this? Never heard of this.

Sometimes an older model can be better. Check out Samsung KS7000. Good all rounder and great for gaming.

Yup, well aware of the ks7000, quality telly apart from the back falling off. I'd buy one before I'd buy the new qled version. Still, the 55' Sony above is £1600 now, in the 9-12 months time when I'm looking to buy it'll be in the 800-1000 range similar to what the ks7000 in the last few months

Ha, Eurogamer are really milking this for all it's worth. They've a new article up explaining how the Scorpio will support FreeSync 2.

Of course, the number of TVs that support it will number near zero for the next few years, but still, at least those who game on monitors will be able to take advantage.

I see Gamasutra are having a Scorpio Reveal of their own tomorrow - DF was about Hardware, Gamasutra will be about the Game Developers and the experience developing for Scorpio and Xbox One at the same time.

Really depends on when we see HDMI 2.1. We may see it in 2018 sets at the very earliest. I doubt it will be a costly upgrade like 4K was at the start.

    Me me me !!!!!

/checks price on a 32'' LG monitor that supports all this

    http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-32UD99-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor

999.99 about what I expected, I won't go any bigger than 27'' for desktop monitor and even at that I'm thinking of going down to a 24'' as I find given the distance to the screen I have to move my head slightly at times to see hud elements in the corners which is not good for the neck.

Sorry to go off topic but in regards to a monitor, can you hook up a Sky box/Android Box to it?
Last time I used a monitor was with my desktop and that was 20 years ago. Would a monitor be better than a TV?

Better than a TV for gaming definitely, probably not for watching movies/TV though. Most monitors these days have a hdmi port so you can hook up just about anything to them.
