Ok lads, tried the Nikwaz cleaner on the jacket in the washing machine,as per the instructions, and it didnt shift a bit of road dirt off the jacket.

Whats the best way to clean a textile jacket prior to using the TXC Direct waterproofing solution on it?

The jacket is an Alpinestars and is only 6 months old,but its manky dirty allready, especially the arms and pockets.

How do you all clean yours?

    Thanks.:)

Try the kitchen/bathroom wipes from lidl. They are very strong. Use about 4 at a time and rub hard

I just bung it in a cool wash with some Persil and rub some concentrate into the stains. Comes out clean.

I think some people would lead you to believe that you are washing a wedding dress.. Motorcycle jackets are tough stuff.

That Nikwax does not really clean stuff I found. I think it fluffs up the fibers in the fabric to close and make it hard for water to get through.

There should be washing instructions on the label..

That all well and good if the jacket is not a waterproof jacket. If its just a normal textile with no waterproofing then have at it.......

NEVER wash a jacket that is waterproof.

I never needed to wash my RST textile jacket which is semi waterproof (Never once leaked after I treated it twice with waterproof spray for Lidl, I have been in uber heavy rain in Germany etc for hours)

I do wash the inside thermals from time to time but I find normal rain does a bang up job of keeping it clean.

As for my leathers I use leather wipes.

LOL. Never wash a waterproof jacket?

I commute in a Gor-tex wind rain snow and sunshine, and it does not take long for the jacket to look like it was found in the dump. It needs washed regularly. And stays water proof if done correctly.

Follow the manufactures advise. Gortex and other WP breathable liners and jackets can be washed in a cool wash. Its even recommended.

Plenty of advise on it online.

So how does one keep an Alpinestars textile jacket clean then?

Its black, grey and yellow,so it showing up the dirt and road grime quite badly allready.:(

I have the same dilemma as you stewy, I found the nikwax stuff didn't clean a thing. Its non goretex waterproof stuff I have too, so I don't want to mess it up by washing it wrong, but right now I look like I dragged the jacket behind me for a few miles, the dirt on it.

Did you even read my post.....I said you can wash the inner liners no probs. Its the main jacket I advise against.

Every man for himself, wash it then. Every time you do you are stripping away the effectiveness of the proofing. Doesnt matter if its Alpine or D Dry or whatever.....the hotter the wash the more the damage. And lets face it a cool wash is not worth a fook.

Goretex, for example is treated with TEFLON to make it water repellent, fabric softeners (which are added to alot of detergents) and detergent strip away teflon over time!

Plenty of articles online to counter every one that says do it.

And if you do wash a waterproof garment.....you sure as hell need to retreat it afterwards.

Diluted vanish and a stiff clothes brush does wonders on my textile stuff....dont go mad with the vanish the elbow grease is what gets it done.

I used a reproofing detergent which is intended for use in Miele washing machines.

You can use it in any washing machine, Miele just have a special cycle for this, but I would assume a very light wool or delicates cycle is more or less the same thing.

They've a range of specialist detergents for ski gear and stuff like that that I haven't seen anywhere else. Could be more a thing in Germany?

Anyway the product is below and it worked a charm in a Miele machine but I'm sure you could just pick a suitable cycle in your own machine too. Key thing is just very very gentle.

    https://m.miele.ie/domestic/miele-detergents-2165.htm?mat=10240540&name=WA_IM_252_L

It worked absolutely outstandingly well on Gortex and similar.

Their wool detergent is also the best I've ever used. Jumpers came out absolutely perfect.

I'd say you'd need to do it in two steps :

Wash the gear first in a normal detergent (with bio)

    Then reproofing agent afterwards.

I'm with you wonda, I don't wash my goretex / D-Dry jacket, only give it the odd wipe down, and still looks like new.

Jacket came out very clean with some Persil and a very slow spin in the washing machine at 30 degrees
Its not showroom clean, but its alot cleaner than it was ,it was manky around the pockets and arms/sides.The light grey and yellow really showing up the road dirt. But so much cleaner now.

Will treat it with the Nikwaz later on.

Another idea that hit me is a steamer, I have a steamer here for the floors which is a big powerful jobbie but I (Well the missus TBH-LOL) have a portable one for curtains and delicates etc. I would say it would do a grand job on textiles etc with gentle steam, just enough to dampen the area and a stiff clothes brush.

You don't have a before picture do you?

I'd be interested in seeing how the waterproofing has been effected on this too. Could you give an update on that when you get out in the wet in it?
