Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

1 mile blast radius. feels like nuclear bomb to people in area. ''Most fearsome explosive weapon'' in US armory. 300 million dollars.

It's a fuel air blast bomb too - especially horrific for anyone in the blast radius. The zone hit is deoxygenated instantly and scorched by intensely high temperatures. Nasty weapon.

They dropped it in/over the mountains on ISIS caves.

    Jesus!

I suppose the days of 'precision strikes' are gone...

Any word on the collateral damage yet?

The US military has dropped the biggest non-nuclear bomb in its arsenal on an Islamic State group tunnel complex in Afghanistan, the Pentagon says.

The GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), known as "the mother of all bombs", was first tested in 2003, but had not been used before in combat.

The Pentagon confirmed the weapon was dropped from a US aircraft in Nangarhar province.

It follows last week's death of a US special forces soldier in Afghanistan.

The 21,600lb (9,800kg) bomb was dropped in Achin district on Thursday evening local time, the Pentagon said.

Gen John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, said the jihadist group's "losses have mounted, they are using IEDs, bunkers and tunnels to thicken their defence.

"This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive."

Yes, that's right. I suppose that will deal with all the baddies. And damn all those civilians who happen to live near Achin district of the Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan.

One step closer to all out nuclear war. Bad times.

How likely is that to happen? Really how likely are the people who dropped this going to monitor civilian casualties.
    Just really shocked.

Are there nice bombs for those in the blast radius?

The area struck will look like the surface of the moon. Basically. It is also designed to suck all the air out of tunnels/caves in the blast zone. If you're in a tunnel and the blast outside doesn't kill you, having your lungs sucked flat a split second later will. :(

Worse than cluster bombing a place.

Did someone say it cost 300 million dollars and weighs nearly 10,000kg.

What in the name of jaysis a bomb, sounds more like an asteroid hitting the place.

That's bad :(. hate that the word ''mother'' is being associated with it too. All this gung ho talk.
I see that there are estimated 1000 - 5000 IS in Afghanistan....hardly merits a bomb like this surely. Something that will live on in ISIL lore, something that will recruit thousands.

If only to show NK what's up.

It's simply not possible to disassociate oneself from the product of ones work especially when that product is the death of others.

Would you say the same about those who worked on the atomic bombs during ww2?

It weigh just under 10 ton. Most is the "thermobaric" fuel load.

What puzzles me most is that the designer of these weapons(a female, as I mentioned) is also of Vietnamese origin. You'd imagine she had seen enough of the horrors of war not to want to add to it, but seemingly, no.

You cant bate a bit of faux outrage.

This wasnt targeted at a city or suburb but a cave network in the mountains.

Mother Russia has a more powerful bomb called the FOAB or Father of all Bombs. The Russians have (correctly) sststed that it is more environmentally friendly than a nuclear device.

This is the US MOAB in use, probably smaller then the one dropped today.
    Allahu Akbar indeed.

This world is a crazy place. Do they even give a damn for the innocent people who happen to live in that area

Do terrorists care about the innocent they kill?? Seen as most if not all are innocent. The bombs being dropped are to giving terrorist hideouts and locations. But for every terrorist killed maybe 10 innocents go with him.

That's her job , where she is from is irrelevant , don't know why your confused, nearly every country in the world has at one time or another gone through the horrors of wars.

Yeah, God love us and our faux outrage. You do realise that there are no unpopulated places. Shepherds and farmers and ordinary people would be living in these mountains. Off you go back to Netflix or whatever you were doing before we annoyed you.

Iodine tablets that have decayed for years in people's homes are useless. We are ****ed if it happens. I can never understand the lack of concern for the quickly escalating fighting. Nuclear is the next step.

I'd say that about anyone who works on any sort of bomb tbh. You'd have to be a bit of a thoughtless gimp. Also, not a tad of outrage here. Just shooting the breeze in a dispassionatish manner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,817 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Think of the carnage caused by the IRA bomb in Manchester in 1996. That was 2000lbs of explosives. This weapon was 10.5 times that size.

I'm getting a bit uneasy about the direction things are going at the moment in Syria, Afghanistan, Russia vs The West, IS and the terror attacks in Europe and if reports are to believed there could be a pretty serious flashpoint coming this weekend in North Korea. We could do with some cooler heads at the highest political levels at the moment and outside of Europe (who are fairly minor players in world events at the moment) I don't see any. You just hope we can avoid any fallout (pun may or may not be intended).
