What would you have done if you were Obama?

North Korea is already under sanctions and the regime doesn't seem to care if the population starves. Any military strike on NK could see them launch attacks against Seoul with the potential for a devastating conflict involving china and Russia that didn't go so well the last time it was tried...

American military strength is excellent at destroying military targets, but terrible at defeating geurilla style militias. North Korea could potentially deploy 6 million infantry to defend it's territory, or attack it's neighbours not to mention thousands of short range missiles aimed at South Korea, nuclear weapons and now the possibility of ICBM technology capable of deploying nukes to anywhere in the world.

If America attacked North Korea, it is a war they can not win and no good can come from it.

The only way the Kims will be deposed is through some kind of internal coup or uprising, but we've seen plenty of times before that often the leaders of these coups are worse than those they replaced.

Russia definitely won't support them, and China isn't going to risk their own economic well being for a country that's ignored them on every possible occasion.

These things tend to get out of control.

China might not be too happy having the entire U.S. navy stationed off it's shores for the x number of years it takes to lose a ground war in North Korea. China would be deluged by refugees from a war and will have to deploy forces on it's border which could become entangled in a conflict.

China is still an antagonistic regime to America. Is china going to allow America use it's air and naval space to stage attacks or pursue North Korean forces?

Is China going to Ally with America in attacks against North Korea or are they going to remain neutral and enforce no fly zones or other DMZs that can bring Chinese and U.S. military assets too close for comfort?

Trump's reaction on Twitter is to mock Kim Jung Un and urges China to do a 'heavy move' on North Korea.

Trump is a clown who could easily drag america into another ground war that they cannot win, or worse, a nuclear conflict

    This is a huge development.

If they have ICBM technology they can directly strike cities in America, China, Europe, Japan

We don't have anything that can shoot them down reliably so unless we can sabotage their launch, any armed conflict with NK will likely result in civilian casualties in the USA, something they haven't experienced since WW2
You're getting way ahead of yourself there. At best, this could hit Alaska. Absolutely nowhere near Europe. And there'd be no warhead on the ICBM. They're not there yet, although in a couple of years, it's possible.

One way or another you got to have some respect for North Korea, a little nation of only 25 million thats been under sanctions for decades but yet everytime its name is mentioned the American 'superpower' and its colonial slave nations poop their collective trousers :D

well it is better if China can put pressure on NK, china doesn't need to trade with NK but I'd imagine NK has to trade with China so China has to have leverage over NK. The US military have some red lines here, if they are crossed they will start considering options like take out the leader covertly or not so and take it from there.

There are possible longer term diplomatic solutions, One I heard was that the parties agree to reunification in a hundred years time. NK could sell it as a win for them likewise the South could as well.

    America isn't crapping itself.

The NK story is doing the job. Keeps feeding the war industry and distracts from America's internal strife.

All it's doing is perfecting the art of a 'cult operation' while it's population lives in extreme poverty and occasional famine. Suspect L. Ron Hubbard's books are currently be reprinted in local dialect.

It's surrounded by enough battle-groups to sink it. Just a question of tact, timing and doing so without disturbing a couple of it's NW neighbours too much.

The longer they keep rattling Japan and SK's cage, the greater the response will ultimately be.

Unfortunately all hope currently lies with the basketball player that was recently sent over by Donald, who's only real skill is well, throwing basketballs at nets.

unfortunately Rodmans shooting stats are not great. His free throw shooting in particular was always terrible.

Highly likely not true ,they have been flying up and down north Korea for 4 decades at least,

Chances are special forces are on the ground too

Actually another development that was missed before the latest misssles test was america offering Korea and Japan new standoff misssles for F16 and F15 aircraft that will allow them to attack ground sites from further and safer distance than they currently have the ability to hit

If the North Koreans are half as starved as we are led to believe, they hardly would have the ....ahem....stomach for a long ground war.

Hard to fight when you are staggering around with the hunger.

    A very large pinch.

Remember all those WMDs in Iraq? That's right. Lies.....

Alaska is in the opposite direction of Europe though :pac:

If their supposed ICBM could hit Alaska, then fire it the other direction and you're on the cusp of Europe.

north korea to alaska is about 3500 miles. NK to europe is nearly 5000 miles. NK to california is further again.

Early days, but an ICBM test is very serious. The threat is more serious for America if the North can hit the United States. Personally Trump kind of brought this on himself. The North only started testing missile after missile when Trump got elected and started threatening them.

NK have been firing missiles since 2006. do you ever do any research?

Every few weeks we have a new test, never happened before. Most Foreign security experts claimed NK was years away from testing an ICMB, but if this true we know next to nothing.

Tests began in the late 70s
But they are getting help from their neighbours who have been exporting misssles and launcher vehicles through their forestry service ,

did you think they would be launching an icbm on their first attempt? it takes years to get to that level. It took years for the US to get to that level and they had one of the best rocket scientists available. the recent tests have nothing to do with trump.

A 5500km missile, as assumed with this, can hit western Alaska. Not Europe. Not hugely far off at the same time...

It still early days, to know exactly the capabilities of the missile are. Trump red line has been crossed. What he do know is anyone's guess. This not a simple decision. The likelyhood of millions and millions of people dying is real. It not a decision i think is easy to make. Japan, Guam, US bases, North Korea and South and China will suffer the most. Can NK hit the United States mainland is anyone's guess.

It's 1960's technology, be real. NK might be poor but they not stupid.
