As a rule, don’t buy Passats if they have chrome door handles.

Current owner only has it since mid January, it's a UK import and it has a fair dent on the boot.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/skoda-octavia-1-9-tdi-elegance-model-nctd-taxed/18104102

This looks clean and cheap enough.
Only tested till June though. No recent owner change and it's not an import either.

No mention of a service history or receipts though which would be a help in figuring out if it has had a recent timing belt or clutch change.

100bhp and 105bhp tdi Octavia's are probably one of the cheapest turbo diesel cars to insure as long as they're around about the 04 mark or above.

Anything to look out for in these type of cars in terms of common faults?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,947 ✭✭✭selectamatic

How do I know which car has the 'PD' engine and the non 'PD'? Also, is that really much of a concern?

The 1.9tdi in 90bhp and 110bhp form are the non pd engines. They've a reputation for being extremely reliable and very economical while also offering decent performance but their simplicity is their main attraction.

However since about 2001 (Seat continued to use them till 2004) they've been replace with pd 1.9 tdi engines which generally offer better performance with a touch less reliability and a bit more complexity. But it's all pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.
Anything to look out for in these type of cars in terms of common faults?

Flywheel rattle, boost leaks (down on power and hissing sounds under acceleration) oil leaks particularly around the sump, oil consumption due to bad turbo seals (blue-ish smoke), central locking issues and window regs.

Headgaskets can go on those too as well as camshaft wear.

Bit on the dear side for an 06 and a 1.6 diesel which are at times trouble.

If you come to see it with 1-1.2k cash they would probably sell. That engine is troublesome. I would stick to petrol ones at that budget, but you might get a year or two of it without any issue, too.

Not exactly exciting, but about as cheap & reliable motoring as you could ever get:

    Rough-looking yoke, imho.

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,616 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

Looks shagged. A very good condition one can be got for close on the same price

Looks like it was just pulled out of a ditch where it was lying for about 15 years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 969 ✭✭✭Greybottle

Ad mentions driver has a disabled vehicle now, so I'd say it was with someone who couldn't drive properly and bounced off every obstacle and car there is.

No wonder mine is full of knocks and dents.

Just needs a bit of orange construction twine holding the bumpers on and she'll be authentic original when she went into that ditch.

NCT August 18. Classic insurance hopefully. Maybe August for that. Good all around except for the known CRV valve problem of that time. Driving away though. So I say Bangernomics for a local runaround.

More fixer upper maybe. But could be an easy fix. Sometimes are.

Wow, that's near enough for nothing.

Valve fault takes the bargain out of it IMO.

What's the nature of the issue? Whatever it is it doesn't sound like an easy, cheap or worthwhile fix otherwise someone would have already done it.

    Clean looking car though, shame.

AFAIK the valves are manual, not hydraulic, and need infrequent adjustment. You could get lucky with that car. Or find a burnt out valve. Then its head off time

I understand your point but I'd honestly reckon if it was as simple as a twist of a spanner, someone would have done it and be charging 7-800 for the car.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Is a 20 year old CRV even worth €800?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Maybe not. Any car with over 6 months test that's driving ok has to be worth €100 a month for every month it's tested?

If the CRV isn't worth €800 with no faults then it's worth €0 now.

    That seems fair.

Tidy/original looking 2003 tdi Golf here ...although the test is just out on it.

    That’s ridiculously expensive

That won't hang around. 10 months test, 3 months tax, reasonable mileage. Bodywork looks tidy and it has alloys and front fogs which brighten it up.

That'd make a good buy it won't hang around.

Maybe for the brave. €950 Audi TT. 4 months test, looks ok and no mention of faults.

It even has aircon. Someone really specced it up in 03

Like most maintenance, it is simple. A turn of a spanner as you say. But if it was skimped, as most likely it was, then its likely bye bye B20 engine.

Taxed and tested for 12 months. Tidy bodywork, low mileage and definitely a future classic. €900.

There is a special place in hell for people who do that to tax discs.

I would class a good nick early CRV as a great winter 2nd car, on classic insurance. That one almost fits the bill.
Pity about the valve. Sorry for OT.

I'd be checking for a perforated edge on that disc. Looks home made.....
