How would you know.if.that was a taxi?

    Would.it have a lot.more .miles on it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

176k miles is standard fare for an Avensis of that era really.

You couldn't really tell if it was a taxi without paying for a history check or if there were old tax discs in the glovebox or something.

Hardly a deal breaker anyway on a car like that!

    Very good find btw '123

(Going from 01 Focus 1.4L). Would you recommend it as a buy?

I was initially hoping to only spend a small amount, but I'm sick of buying cars that only last a year before failing their NCT and having to replace them because they're a write off. I'm also hoping for something that will save me money over the next few years, so the economy of this and the low tax are pretty attractive.

    Any feedback much appreciated.

It's not a car I think many people would be able to advise on.
The 1.4 standard petrol was just terrible but once you got into the turbo charged bracket the engines seemed to hold up better.
The 2.0 in that I think is the 165bhp version? But can't be 100% but it's for sure no less than 150.
So you'll notice a serious improvement over a 1.4 focus.
Take it for a drive and listen for suspension noises, check the oil cap for head gasket failure and make sure all the electrics work.
Apart from that take it for a spirited drive and check if it spews smoke.
If it picks up speed well, has smooth gear changes, no rattles then go for it.

Recommended? I wouldn't have an issue buying one at all.
We have the smaller 1.9 version of that engine and it's been fault free in the 5 years we've had it.

    I'd drive it!

€1750. I'd say the dealer would only be delighted to get rid of this

Amazing how the insurance issues have destroyed the prices.

I sold a 2002 for 1900 less then 2 years ago probably year and a half.

239km in a Yaris though ugh...

The Mk2 Yaris is not as well built as the Mk1 so they don't have the same desirability or resale values.

Ugh he will struggle to shift it id say. I don't even think the 2.0 petrol has 120bhp while the diesel has 150bhp. Seems like a sale proof car.

I stand corrected. Dunno where I'm getting 118 from. I could be thinking of the older Mazda 6 engine. Interesting...

Mazda6 had 141 (until 2005) and 147 (after that) hp.

Aren't they the same as the duratec's in the Ford's of that era?

If so they're a grand engine, rev nicely and punchy enough for what they are too.

However, good advice has two main qualities. It is usually free and it is seldom listened to. If you want to buy a €1k~ car that will give years of trouble free driving it really has to be a Corolla, or possibly an Avensis.

Never a truer word spoken, I went off searching for a nice 5 door corolla hatch (Along with everyone else scouring this thread) just missing out on a nice 1.6 one in Kilkenny and sure enough before I knew it I’d agreed to buy this unseen:

    MjRmNjlkZTVmZDZlY2QxMTAzYzZlNzNhYzU5ZWY2ZjNgs6IMQ-gAGsoa5Xs6U0VeaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b185ODcyMTA1MXx8fDYwMHg2MDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    NzViMzA2MmNmMmMzY2VkNmMwYTkwMGViZmJjNGE4NmEmG-nMEGsBwJArlVpe1zCdaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b185ODcyMTA1OXx8fDYwMHg2MDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

So of my original criteria :

Close to Galway Fail, Wicklow about as far away as you can get from Galway on this Island

    Petrol Fail

    1.0 to 2.0 Pass

Cheap < €1000 Fail @ the higher end of bangernomics budget

say no older than 2004 Just about

    Nice to haves:

Recent NCT & low owners Low owners but short test

I prefer cars that are slightly over engined & high spec ( think 1.8 corolla) well I got the high spec

    Cruise control Yep

The front end bodywork is the only thing letting it down, I'm tempted to get a front end respray but that's not keeping with the spirit of the thread

But the good points: Nice colour inside & out, only 2 owners in the past 10 years , Great spec,Low mileage (125k miles), complete audi service history, cruise control, 6 speed 130hp, 4 new pirellis recently fitted, new battery just fitted, 3 keys, recent timing belt.

It was undersold in the add & after speaking to the owner for a few mins I knew it was going to be a gem, he was hoping to sell a 131 5 series and keep this but got no bites on the 5er.

I’ve no real need for a diesel but it kinda fell on my lap & I've a bit of experience of these PD engines and have never had a problem so I expect the same with this one, to me they were from the last generation of truly reliable diesels. I'll stick it in for an early test & see what happens.

Anyways thanks for the help on this thread as always, even if it wasn’t listened to

Nice one, that looks great. Love the colour.

Audi floor mats always (always) wear right through as the miles get higher so I'd take that driver's floor mat as a good sign.

    Good luck with it

Just enough test and a bit of tax. Not the most desirable colour but tidy examples are getting scarce, be a nice car to have.

Quick one lads, worthy of this thread

Would anyone be bothered with a 98 Micra with 2 months tax and 10 months NCT ?

Basic 4 door, 2 keys. Doesn't have power steering !

Has a crack on the windscreen

    What are the thoughts ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

    €250-300 maybe.

    Cracked windscreen kills it

The owner is scared to ring the insurance for a replacement windscreen incase they just write it off and it's a claim against them

Once you see them going there they usually have it elsewhere as well. It's a common area to go on them and it's very difficult at this stage to get a rust free example.

Also the seats on the facelift for some reason wear a lot faster than the seats on the pre facelift.

A windscreen would hardly be that expensive? I got a windscreen for a 98 starlet for 140 quid
