Would have been 710 odd on cc rates which a lot of bangernomics stuff is. It’s a smart looking car for €2k.

    Tax is a bit high @750 p.a.

Were you expecting something else on a 2k car with a 2.0L engine?

Definitely looks a lot more than two grands worth.

Dealer would be a safe enough bet, they're around a while now.

A 2.0 S40 wouldn't be top of very many people's wish lists. I don't know anything about them

I'm looking at buying a petrol car soon & will have a budget of around 5k. Because I want a petrol, I'm now thinking bangernomics may be a better way to go. Found this Volvo - any thoughts on it, things to look out for?

I've a 08 1.8F S40. Lovely car inside, very comfy for the driver. Not much space in the back or boot really. Have had a few niggly bits go wrong on me, all electrical/wiring though. Engine hasn't needed anything more than oil and filters changed, 154kms on it now and i've been commuting to Dublin for the last 7 weeks in it not a bother. Will miss the seats in it I think, looking to get rid in the next few weeks.

Or put it another way would you spend 38 % of your cars original cost on motortax every year ? False economy.

Also there's a lot of post 2008 2.0 L executive size cars in €280 tax band , hence why Diesel is so popular. It's all well and good aspiring to petrol but the tax man hits you hard.

With the budget of 5k I mentioned, the tax won't bother me too much. For say €3k all in looks like a nice car, & I'd have an extra €2k in my pocket! I'd be keeping it for 18 months or so too.

There's very little in the way of decent petrol's for €5k, so a decent bangernomics is very appealing.

You are right there are lots of post 2008 cars out there in the cheap tax band. But this is for cars under €2k so you are not going to get a 2008 BMW for under €2k just to get some cheap tax. The pre 2008 car tax rates are a fact of life.

Is that flexifuel? The only thing I'm hesitant about those is they have to be serviced every 10k I think. I've looked at a few low mileage examples from 08, they're going for little money for a lot of car.

What difference does it make how much you have paid once you own it? Would a tax bill become more palatable if the car was more expensive?

Tax is just a running cost. With that small advantage that you know exactly bhow much it will be...

Fair play to anyone who rails against our ridiculous tax system.
€750 is a nonsense rate for a 2 litre car but it has become almost accepted as normal.

There looks to be rust bubbling over the rear wheel arch and side overhang of the rear bumper in picture 3. Rust was a huge problem on that generation of Merc and it took a lot of them off the road permanently.

    Not a clue

I think it was the non turbo 2.3d lump that we got here that was as slow as a wet week. In saying that a 2.0td with a 4 speed auto in that Jap import ain't going to be much quicker.

It is yeah. I was doing very little mileage when I had it so 10k worked out at once a year for me and wasn't an issue.

I'm not doing a whole lot myself, it's why I want the change from diesel. Maybe send me a PM when you decide to move yours on.

The mention of RWD and LSD and the fact that it has so many owners (I know it’s old) means it’s fallen into the wrong hands already.
