I don't think they have tbh. It's just the way the sun is shining on it. I still wouldn't go for that car though because being an import and because of it's age insurance could be difficult.

I'd go for a high spec jazz instead with preferably a fsh.

Insurance quote was the same as my avensis, high spec jazz is outside my budget,

Criteria basically is 2005 onwards, small to medium automatic for bangernomics money and there's not a lot to chose from lol

Have that in my saved ads a while now, something just doesn't seem right about it,maybe cause he has 5 other car for sale, but heading north side tomorrow so might finally go look at it.

    Appreciate the links m8.

What’s strange is that 4 of the cars he has for sale are automatics!

Not too bad even though the engine isn't the best but NCT 05/19 and the better looking 3 door.
    Under 900e and warranty.

    Worth a look?

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/alfa-romeo-159/18834409

NCT till 09/18, look pretty clean but the 1.8 isn't the most lively in that kind of car.

Isnt that the GM sourced one shared btween it, saab and opel as opposed to the twinspark in the 156? If so best avoided.

The 1.8 twinspark is a beaut of an engine, my favourite engine note from a 4-cyl

If anyone is thinking about it feel free to drop me a pm

Yep, a pretty gutless engine but I mean if you're just going around the town it should be fine.
Personally I'd go to the 1.9 JTS at the very least but if I needed something for under a grand I'd take a look.

I assume that model suffers from the usual Alfa Romeo reliability issues?

    And what that would be?!

This model suffers from 159 model issues:
    - soft gearbox M32 (GM made)
    - steering rack leaking
    - timing chain stretching (in 1.9 and 2.2 JTS - again GM Made)
    - DPF and EGR issues (with the diesels)
    - intake manifold flaps issues (with the diesels)

Generally speaking the 159 is a reliable car.

I didn't know the specifics, just heard that Alfa Romeos can be unreliable. Thanks for the info.

I had a 166 for a while and had no issues with it

They are beautiful looking cars especially the interior

I've heard some stupid stuff fail in 159 like seat electrics. Friends 159 2.0 gearbox broke dunno if it was related to GM fault called out by grogi.
Same car needed engine reconditioned, can't remember specifics.

And this proves What? There is no such thing as a full proof reliable car.
We are talking about a sub 1k 159.
Sure Alfa will need a bit more attention but at the same time they can be a very reliable car.
The 2.0 in a 159 is a diesel which isn't a gm unit so I'm a bit surprised as to why it failed.
I've a 159 albeit a 5 cylinder and it has not caused a single issue. I'd a 156 which went to nearly 260k miles and it went fine.

Which is "they are as a reliable as any car once properly maintained" :p

I've a relative offloading a 2004 Honda Civic Exec VTEC (I've a feeling it may be auto too).

    100k miles, FSH, NCT 'til May 2019 & he's the 2nd owner - had it since 2006.

Any ideas on what price to pitch it?

    600 imo ,limited market

Ah now, I would have said about €1200. Longterm owner and FSH etc are good signs

Is it a saloon or hatch? Find out of its manual or auto though, that will make a difference

I know the car extremely well. It was a Taxi but was only ever used for local work.

It's not getting a lot of interest on the classifieds atm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Being ex taxi certainly devalues it, or at least makes it less desirable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,243 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

A quick wash, tidy up the interior and fresh photos on a brighter day might make it more appealing. Otherwise it just looks like another jaded Avensis ex taxi on donedeal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Even cleaning the wheels and taking the seat covers off would make it far more appealing in the ad. Body looks tidy.

Mightn’t be any harm to get him to list the spec it has:
    9 airbags
    16” alloy wheels
    Front foglights
    Front and rear electric windows
    Steering wheel radio controls
    Remote locking

Noth8ng exotic there, but no harm in listing it.

Would also suggest changing “no problems with engine or gearbox” to “engine and gearbox working perfectly”

I reckon the seat covers are there for a reason!
