I know it's not really relevant to Bangernomics principles, but those BMW compacts are hideously malformed monstrosities. The proportions are all wrong due to the car being shortened - they look like clown cars.

I would love one of these as a weekend motor. Currently haven't a secure place to store one... But working on that.

There seems to be a good amount of well looked after examples available. I'd have hopes the petrol version will age better and would be simpler to maintain and repair as they get older.

This one is sub 2k and full nct. But this one doesn't have leather interior that is more common on these.

They’re very nice alright. We had one of them and an E46 cabriolet in the family last summer and the Audi was better in every respect. You can insure them on a classic policy too fwiw

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭rn

The BMW 3 series equivalent convertible has not aged well IMHO. That's interesting to hear re insurance, because last time I looked into it the insurance wanted 4.5k for TPFT... Which was a lot for what I was going to use it for!

Out of interest where does insurance on one of these as classic. I briefly looked at classic before and the ones I looked at wanted the car to be 20 years old plus. I’d love a bangernomics convertible for the summers

Autoline, 15 year limit for German cars

Ive my E36 with them since 2017. 15 years is the cut off but you will pay more. €350 for the year but when declared off the road and you inform them they will switch you to offroad cover at about €129 and refund the difference. 20 years and it halves.

    Skoda VRS Combi
Really like the look of these,
Would it be possible to get classic insurance on this considering it’s not strictly German?

Jesus thats immaculate. If all that work is done (and no reason to doubt it, its a very good ad) then its a serious bargain.

Once you have a daily driver I'd imagine you should be able. It's just the Jap stuff they won't do.

Hm, I dunno if Autoline would be a bit funny about putting a Skoda on a classic policy. Would be best to ring and ask. That looks like a smashing car for the money

It's sold, contacted him this afternoon but just missed it. Painful!

Wouldn't be surprised if it appeared next week closer to €3k

If nearly take it if it did. Been looking for a clean estate as a 2nd car for wife and kids for a few weeks and this looked great. Ah well!

In 20 years time we will all be wondering why we didn't buy that nice E46 325i for a grand when any 325i that moves is 10 k and more*.

I know this because in 1996 I did not have the forsight to buy a Mk 2 Escort for 500 quid. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like to drive.

Bear in mind that an E46 is leagues ahead of where a Mk 2 was.

The thing with the BMWs is they have that 6 cylinder cool stuff going on. That's going to get rare.

*see AE86 twin cam and Ford Escort Mk 2s

How do you get insurance on a car like that with the 10 year rule?

my daily driver is older than that, so maybe with an existing insurance?
what's the strictness on classic or vintage cars re nct? a bit to go I know, is an not even due on classic/vintage and what are the definitions? only vintage? after 30 years?
10 years is laughable anyway, many immaculate 10yr old cars, minimum should be condition of car and then maybe age but based on condition again.

E36 values are going nuts so I don't doubt you're right. However preventative maintenance can erase a lot of the gains.

My insurance company said they insure if you have the car before it goes over the 10 years. Not officially but I found in press they mentioned it a few years back....

Just the BMW above. I have tried a couple of companies, just online quote tools and all come back with "unable to quote" bulls**t.

Now it is not the engine size or my history so it has to be the age of car.

So just wondering how people get around it?

Autoline will insure BMW's once over 15 years and you have a daily driver.

    A separate car you mean?
