The mk3 has the valvematic engine which is an excellent unit. The previous vvti was a very reliable engine too but on emissions based tax they are €750 per annum while the newer valvematic is only €390.

I didn't know it was petrol, a valvematic in 2009 would be extremely rare I'd make certain it wasn't the vvti.

Erm, I'm not sure not sure on that one. As per the Wikipedia article the MK3 Avensis had a 1.6 1ZR-FAE engine and as per the second link this engine is a VVTI unit - albeit a different 1.6 VVTI unit to that found in the MK2.

No doubt they are not too common on these shores but I have seen a few MK3 1.6 petrol Avensis for sale in the past.

I picked up a nice zetec, 1.6 petrol, 2008 Ford Mondeo yesterday for 1200 :) 2 previous owners, nice grey colour, and tested until January. I'm impressed with the interior on it, a really nice place to be. Very slow but for the money you can't complain.

Yep the 1.6 valvematic engine as johnboy posted about a few posts ago.

The 1.6vvti engine from the zz family is the older engine found in the mk2 avensis.

Rough and ready 130 bhp A6 with NCT till 2020, €750 but I'd bet on €500 most likely driving this away

I saw a set of those alloys on adverts there at the start of the year go for €450

You'd wanna give it a very thorough going over. Someone buying a cheap car off Bill and then finding something wrong with it has happened quite a few times.

Surely if theres something so wrong with it it'll be hard to miss on viewing/driving it. My guess is clutch. But even still I'd take a chance on it and get as long out of the car as I could, sell those alloys and scrap whats left. Maybe its better suited to the new cheap-o thread..

I was shopping mazdas, why are they so expensive to tax as 2008 + registrations?

I'm guessing your looking at petrol models? In general motor tax went up on petrol models and down on diesels in 2008 when the change was made from engine capacity to CO2 emission basis for private car motor tax. I re-emphasise in general as it will have depended on the very engine at the time and that would be driven in no small part in general by its age at the time. For the most part the motor tax on petrol models went up at the time with the general exception of some then modern petrol units while visa versa for the diesels.

That Mazda 3 I provided link for is on the old engine capacity basis with the motor tax being €514. If it were on the CO2 basis it would be €570 to tax. I'm fairly certain that a Mazda 6 MPS was on the highest of the CO2 rates at the time. By comparison the motor tax on a 08 1.6 diesel Mazda 3 on the CO2 basis is €270

Ay I'm referring to how they are referenced by toyota though. The older zz was denoted vvti but the newer 1.6 is denoted valvematic.

Turbo seals on the way out, possibly a suspect headgasket or injector seals going bad could be easily enough missed too.

That said it could be grand and it'd do fine as a cheap buy. It is interesting that it's up for sale again though.

Anything in particular to look out for in these mazda 3's?

    Because they're bad on emissions.

Anything June 2008 onwards were co based so lots of 1.4, 1.6 etc increased as they are terribly bad on juice for example.

Has he been in a Mazda 3 yet?

Im not sure colm. I dont know where this mazda 3 came from. Going to ring him tonight and try and convince him to buy a 1.8 civic. He was previously in a hyundai coupe and thought it was the dogs so... Normally id have a look at cars for friends that are completely clueless and an open book. Its a less comfortable thing with someone who has a little bit of knowledge and a certain model in mind. Its only to keep him on the road for the year as the hyundai was a write off after someone tipped into it so.its more about reliability than a nice place to sit etc.

It’s hard to beat a 1.8 civic for ease of ownership in my experience.

I looked at a 09 for a friend and it definitely was the older engine in the new body, Irish car 750 tax, he didn't buy it, that was in 2016.

Was chatting to him there. After i pointed out a load of holes in this yolk he wanted to view, https://m.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mazda/Mazda3-1.6-SPORT-4DR/201903266268997 civics are in the game. They look to be the best value at this in this particular bangernomics sector at the moment. Should make things a bit easier.

I didn't like the look of the car or the boyo selling it, definitely something dodgy going on, I questioned him about it's engine, he got very shifty, don't know what became of it, MN plate... It was time to walk..

They weren't ever fitted with the old engine so I don't know how that is. Are you certain it was the new model?

You're right, the seller was trying to convince the buyer it was the new petrol engine in a 09 last of the line old model, it wasn't. Sorry for the confusion, old age setting in...
