Is it just me or is the quality of cars popping up in this thread after improving in the last 6 months? Is this because of Brexit-imports, PCP finance on newer cars etc?

    3 x Lancers. 1.3 & 1.6 petrol's.
    '05, '06 & '07!

I have a bit of a soft spot for these. Owned one a good few years back and it never let me down once. I always think they fly under the radar a little when people are looking for Jap reliability (Corolla/Civic)
Maybe I got lucky with my one and they are not that good?
A lot cheaper than a similar year Corolla anyway!

All NCT'd, respectable looking and asking in and around the €1k mark

I like those Lancers too, they're nice to drive but definitely don't feel as nice inside as an equivalent Corolla. Grand cars though overall. The Lancer name gets a bit of a bad rap from previous models loved by boy racers and the likes

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,685 ✭✭✭✭wonski

They are just boring, the Lancers.Poorly equipped and outdated.

Any ones I ever traded in (as in the shape like the ones linked) were very high spec. They all had aircon and alloys and stuff.

Drove once recently by chance and was quite impressed tbh. Yeah the interior is adorned with cheap plastic but it was decent to drive. The 1.5 petrol is the one to get, responsive insofar as it can be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,455 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That’s the newer 2008 model I’d say. I’d have an 08 one over an 08 Corolla petrol for instance.

Tbh I don't think the quality has changed dramatically over the last while. Although I do think we are in the Golden era of bangernomics.
In 10 or 15 years time the landscape will have changed dramatically with electric and hybrids presumably established.
Duck knows what the sub €2k man or woman will be driving then.

    You're right there.

The quality that's available for what is "no money" is scandalous.

The famous A6 for example really drove it home.

I only drove one, but they look outdated. Suzuki Liana look imo.

I am not saying they are bad cars, but they really don't deliver. Look at the interior pictures in the ads linked and they really are poor.

They’re def outdated and feel flimsy, but they’re well equipped

Equipped with what? Those temp knobs?

Other manufacturers did better in 2007 tbh.

We are past the golden era - which was like 5 years ago. Same money would buy you a two-three years younger cars than today.

Funny you say that, I just mentioned to the wife today we bought our '05 Lancer in early 2011 (Feb) for €3,950.
It's the equivalent of buying '13 Lancer today for €3,950..!! Doubt that's going to happen. Even allowing for inflation.

As said, the ones I saw had side skirts, alloys, remote locking, 4 electric windows, aircon, some had Nardi steering wheel. They were just well equipped (meaning they had lots of stuff rather than they were well finished) compared to what you’d get on a Focus/Corolla.

Similarly I got a low mileage 2006 Superb Elegance (full leather, climatronic, nice hifi etc) in 2011 for 5k. 5 year old car. Not bangernomics, but still fantastic value.

I'd love to get a 2014 Superb for that today...

Motor tax system changes in 2008 have played a role in vehicles holding their value better.

They stopped selling them I think last year.

Possibly some unsold ones in a yard somewhere.

Hard to believe the Punto was once a key part of the small car landscape with the Mk 1.
