0-60 10 secs The only sleeper that is handy for is sleeping in the back.

    0-60 means fcuk all

If it'll stay side by side with a modern 170+bhp diesel on a dual carriageway it's faaaasshhhtt

Isn't that the same 2.8 V6 that used to be found in VR6 Volkswagens? 2.8 litres (2.9 in Corrado), 1400 euro tax and not even 200bhp IIRC?

2.8 V6 with NCT to almost March 2018 and tax to 9/17 for €300. Even if you don't need a 7 seater it could make for a nice yoke to get around in for a while!

Cheap vr6 conversion there be much more fun in a mk 2 golf

Was thinking exactly the same thing! Being manual and all

These old cars can't compare to modern cars for performance. I dunno why you'd ever compare them.

I have a T4 camper outside that could really do with something like a VR6..

    And a Golf cabrio..

No use in a 2 ton minivan but put it into a sub 1200 kg mk2 or3 golf and they make a lot more sense/fun! '

I'm awfully biased here but the sound of the vr6 is one of the best ever

If you said Mk1 or Mk2 I'd agree. The Mk3 was way too bloated and underpowered to ever set many pulses racing. Even in VR6 guise it was nothing to write home about. Only transplant that makes the Mk3 much good (personal opinion) is a tuned 1.8 turbo lump.

I like the look of this. NCT to 4/18, tax to 8/17, its nice and original and clearly well looked after. €600

Shame its missing its Sporting alloys

The ad says "Made in Poland" and I spent almost 10 minutes trying to figure out if the steering wheel was in the right place or not.

    I'm not that sharp today.

At €2k with four new tyres it wouldn't be bad value at all. There's an 03 one on Donedeal for €1100 but it has no NCT and has the look of a hard life about it, whereas that one looks much perkier.

Doesn't the rear right shock mount look rusty?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,078 ✭✭✭W123-80's

This is a handsome car. It's no W124 and they certainly didn't hold up as well. But they are a nice bus.
    This looks a decent example.

Looks like a good one alright. The key with these is to check for rust underneath, especially the front suspension crossmember. Can be lethal if it collapses as many have.

Bit off topic here but thinking of selling my 03 diesel mazda 6. Nearly new Pirelli tyres on it and about 7 or 8 months tax left. 190k miles still going strong, bad news is the clutch needs replacing which will cost at least 600 quid.

I've looked at the ads and know it's not worth much but would I have any hope of even getting 1k ish for it?

Hard to see but it only looks like a rusty nut to me. It's not an area where they rust so it wouldn't put me off inspecting.

That's good value as hard tops for these are rare and expensive. You could probably sell the hard top with fitting kit for €500 if you didn't want it.

Just make sure the emissions are OK on NCT. They can burn oil if not maintained according to schedule.

It's not even worth that in fully working order unfortunately. They haven't got a good reputation.

Scrap it and claim back the tax. Keep the wheels and tyres and sell them on.

A small bit of surface rust on top of the shock(not the car body) is hardly out of the ordinary or something to be worrying about.

Sure when you can buy a 2006 with an NCT left on it for a few months for €450 why would anyone fork out nearly €1600 on an older model?

Sold now. They were one of a few cars that ended up worse looking after a facelift but still a very good car nonetheless

Thanks for all the replies, I did have a look at ads and was guessing mine wasn't worth anything, was hoping the long tax on it might tempt someone.

I've read a lot about the cars reputation, I've had the car 12 years, put over 140k miles on it. Only trouble I've had is fuel pump went over 100k miles ago, had to replace both rear calipers and had to drop the sump to clean out the oil gauze mesh thing that was apparently 80% blocked when I got it done.

Will miss me car, handles well, I found it to be very reliable, I regularly serviced it every 10k miles and kept it topped up with oil and regularly changed the fuel filter which is a bit of a pig of a job.

Personally I think the reason so many fail is them not being looked after properly, the big end failure they are known for is because the oil gauze mesh thing gets blocked, and not servicing the car when it's due and keeping the oil topped up, just my opinion though, mind you over 140k miles and never a breakdown kinda proves my point.

Pity because I was hoping to break the 200k on the car :-)

Actually does anyone know if I take the car off the road can I claim the tax back or do I have to scrap it?

The first one is priced well below the market, there must be something wrong with it or the owner ;) It is just approaching the NCT - and that might be it...

The other two seems priced okish.

No they are just a disaster full stop regardless of maintenance. I remember a relative looking at a very fresh one that was only a few years old back in the day and that had already gone through a turbo despite having a fsh. You were very lucky.
