Audi A2 2002 - NCT'd to end June 2018 and taxed to end Sept 2017

Would you pay that kind of money for that kind of Starlet?

Collectors and those with an interest in cars perhaps. However, for a daily driver it certainly wouldn't work for me. While the market for it might be limited it might still be there for certain buyers.

Is it your own? (Just going from first name / last name and your username).

In fairness, it looks nice, and there are folk who really like the A2. I wonder if your price is high: I've a friend who couldn't give away his petrol A2 recently. He ended up getting 200 for it on trade-in (and signed "destruction" paperwork on handing it over, so they definitely planned to scrap it).

I hope you get a sale rather than going that route. I'd be curious to know what price you get too, if you'd share later on (depending on what it is, I might not tell my mate!)

Yes, tis my own, sure I'll let you know what I get for it.
In fairness, it's in great nick, no dings and running soundly.
I just need something a bit bigger.

That was my mate's situation too. 2 seats in the back of his only, so couldn't work with 3 kids. His had a few more dings than yours, but nothing bad and it was well kept inside. I know he was sorry to see it go.

    Yes, and timing chain failures.

Aside from that, they feel anything but solid. Horrid things.

Had a 2006 Nissan Primera, the thing was bullet proof, never game me an ounce of trouble in 2 years.

That is the only good thing going for it.

I couldn't get rid of it easily and when i did it was for sod all, 3 months tax, 27 months nct and i got €900 for it in 2014.

Gearbox failure wasn't an issue with these as far as I'm aware, more that the linkage became very worn and it felt like stirring a large pot selecting a gear.
Had two and never had an issue with the gearbox.

Timing chain stretch was an issue however, but again, down to the good ol' Irish maintenance regime, my 2004 with well over 150k miles was running as sweet as a nut compared to a mates 06 with considerably less mileage, but I serviced mine religiously.
In 3 years and 3 NCT's I didn't have one issue, the emissions actually reduced every year, and the car is still on the road another two years on.

Other than that rust along the sills and front cross member needs to be watched.

I have a certain fondness for them as mine served me very well, and my wife learned to drive in one, but they can't hold a candle to comparable Honda's or Toyota's of the same age.

Tbh I don't think it will be back for double the price. Most likely back for much the same price when the tax is out. Mightn't be back at all.

They've fallen off a cliff price wise the last few months 03 ones selling for near 1k with plenty of test and that's up around the outskirts of Dublin where cars are easiest sell. There's plenty of
05 -07 ones up for around 3k but very few selling quickly which leads me to believe they're going for closer to 2k than sellers are letting on.

All good news for prospective buyers cos they've a great engine, reliable enough drivetrain and a reasonable towing capacity of 2200kg. Finnicky enough in the electrics department though according to honest john and the likes.

Gearboxes were absolutely an issue on these and the chain issues can't be blamed on irish maintenance because it was a widespread issue due to poor quality. The previous model didn't have any issues with chains and there was plenty of those sold here back in the day.

What the hell. It's €2950 with over €1,000 of tax on it which makes it Bangenomics (in theory). Needs plenty of cosmetic work, but the value of this is only going one way. And yes, I've posted it in classics and Luxobarge threads, but if I had the space I'd honestly go have a look and buy it if it needed nothing major.

Clean looking avensis , mileage a little high but lots of maintenance appears to have been done. Great workhorse.

Terrible alignment between the front bumper and bonnet/wings. Multiple shades of paintwork too by the looks of it.

And the likes of a ford escort isn't too ordinary?

To be fair, escorts have the whole rally following thing that Starlets don't.

I think that Starlet will probably make the asking price though, as, for some reason I don't really get, they have a following. Possibly due to the fact that many people now in their 30's/40's learned to drive in them.

Nice Passat, ideal 2nd car. alloys are worth a few quid on their own as well.

    NCT 04/18 €1,500

€1,500 is way over the top for that Passat.

Would you bother though? If I was going to buy a 90's "weekend" car, it would either be a sportscar for a bit of fun, or an estate for practicality. This would just be like my everday car except less comfortable, slower, and uglier.

Cortinas wouldn't and they are classics.

    +1

I would rather buy this good looking tt with this budget in mind:

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/audi-tt-quattro/15872521

NCT 10/18, taxed until the end of September.

True, but Cortinas are "dad cars" and don't look like a generic eurobox the way Starlets do. They are also positively old-school unlike that Starlet.

Now that's a proper weekend car. Absolute bargain at that price, especially with the belt & clutch done. Keep a few quid aside for a replacement turbo and you've a car for years.
