Diesel Jags are like male prostitutes, I understand why they exist, I just wouldn't have any use for one myself.

Nice looking E60 520i with NCT to 7/18 for €1250

Definitely my next car but in auto. Agreed a deal for a similar example a few weeks back but the seller pulled out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Looked at a few diesels as potential A6 replacements, and E65s. They're still quite fresh cars

Well lads, I'm selling my trusty old Leon, 04 1.4 petrol, I've had an ad up for the last two weeks and not a nibble, am I looking for too much, is there something missing with the ad maybe? Any advice appreciated, just looking to get rid as the replacement is already bought!

It's more a €750 car in my opinion.

Cheers, I just had a look around to see what was similarly priced and went with that, would you think €750 firmish so would be better so?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,685 ✭✭✭✭wonski

I think Leon of that age and in general is not that popular.
Nothing wrong with the car, just very limited market given its age.
Lower the price down to €700-€800 and see what happens.

With a relatively long NCT it should sell.

The other cars were probably similarly priced for weeks. You want to sell it before the NCT becomes relatively short ;)

That is the main selling point when dealing with older cars.

Its a lovely runner, never gave me any hassle. Grand so, I'll drop her down and see what happens, thanks for the advice!

Sadly many insurance companies won't cover cars over 14 years of age. Anyone searching for a cheap car will know this if they've done their homework so its gonna be a hard one to shift since it'll be 14 in 4 months.

I'm currently half-looking for a bangernomic replacement for the second car in the household and I've set my filter to nothing older than 2005 for the insurance reason. At least then we might get a little over a year out of it. Crying shame as I've seen some smashing 01/02 plate cars that I'd jump at if it weren't for the insurance headache. :(

The limit is 15 years not 14 but you will still get insurance on a 15 year old car from certain insurance companies but will be limited to a choice and may have to pay more.

Off topic but those bastard insurance companies need to be called out by the relevant authorities over this.
Absolutely mad to tell people we will only insure cars 2002/2003 up this year.
    Next year 2003/2004.
Forcing people to either take a chance without it or upgrade their car simply cause they can't get insurance. In a country where looking for a house has gone to the dogs and if you find one get ready to pay over the odds or live in Achill and commute to Dublin.
    Shower of ****es

Not sure folk are forced to upgrade, AFAIK even the insurers who'll turn down a 15 year old car as new insurance will keep renewing the older car if it's been on their books already. However, it does mean you're not not able to shop around for insurance as much, plus your car becomes much much harder to sell as any buyer will have difficulty insuring the vehicle.

I've had no issues insuring >15 year old cars recently.
My non-EV daily driver is currently a 1999 and before that I had an 01 and a 1997. With 2 different companies in the past 12 months, insurance is 600-700 per annum.

Try and get a new qoute for those cars. I think you will find that very few will be willing to give you a qoute and anyone that does it will be a lot more expensive than a newer car.

What insurers have you had success with?
Worthwhile to know, so folk can maybe start ringing for quotes with insurers that will handle older vehicles.
FWIW, I'm on an employer/company policy now (wrapping Allianz) who seem happy with any age car... but not much help to anyone else.
Previously I also found Axa to be not very bothered by vehicle age (and I insured a 00D car with them for first time in 2015, so there and thereabouts)

I moved company twice, once to liberty and once to 123, no issues getting quotes. now im not exactly 21 any more so perhaps thats why?

Same. Always loses internet connection too.

I recently got a quote of 950 quid from 123 for a 2006 1.1 litre car, over 20 years experience, full licence , never any claims. I do recall been asked when I purchased the car which I replied earlier this year, that's a ridiculous quote. I was only testing the water.

No the reason why is because they are about the only 2 that will give qoutes for older cars. You have f€ck all room to shop around and I know with liberty they will only offer third party fire & theft on older cars. One of the first questions some insurance companies are asking now is "is the car under 15 years old?"

I also had an older car insured and had very limited room for shopping around and I haven't been 21 for a long time either and have been driving for 10+ years but it's not your age that matters it's the age of the car that is the problem.

Mine was around €300 more expensive on the older car compared to a newer model and that is without shopping around.

As much as I dislike the disaster of the insurance industry in Ireland. Being forced onto 3rd Party Fire & Theft for an older car isn't a problem. A colleague recommends that any car under €10k should only have 3rd Party Fire & Theft and I agree with him.

Even more so when we're dealing with a Bangernomic. It's a waste of money to get comprehensive on a car that is worth max €2k.

I think you are incorrect. Have my 2001 car insured comprehensively :)
