Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Adult caution vs. a previous conviction at sentencing

I'm not looking for legal advice but I am interested in finding information about how, in practise, a prior adult caution of  defendants is treated by sentencing Judges in Ireland, versus a prior conviction. I have heard differing views on this matter. One opinion said that judges do not give that much weight at all to an adult caution because it was not handed down by a court of law after the full facts of a case were heard. Another view said that judges will basically regard it as a previous conviction for that offence for the purposes of determining a sentence. It obviously must have some effect, otherwise it would be pointless in mentioning it, but what, in practise, is the effect of an adult caution? I'm interested to hear from anyone with experience of this in the courts. Thank you.
