Computer Science, I'm specialising in softwared development.

When you finish college you will probably end up in a graduate program. You will earn around €25k a year for the first couple of years. Quick google search tells me that a Senior Software Engineer earns €60k a year.

€80k might be more than 5 years away.... but it isn't out of reach long term. You'll get there.

No excuse. It's as easy to spell correctly using a phone as using a keyboard. Though when you get your 80k job you can pay someone to do all your typing for you! :D

i hate this attitude. college isn't for everyone and you're not guaranteed a good job afterwards at all these days. everyone has a degree now.

Thats a poor attitude. Even if its common to have a degree now doesn't mean you shouldn't still try to get one, its an advantage when looking for a job. Also not all degrees are made equal.

Who needs money when you have a bag of yokes.

That explains the gay baboon Google search!!

Oh you can see plenty earning more than that but it depends on the specialisation.

Actually finishing his degree, getting his 80k salary before looking down and judging people on minimum wage

    Presuming they are uneducated

OP you could be on minimum wage too after college, many are

So you hate ambitious people? Unless you get a degree, or a trade your not building a career for yourself.

The only ambition I like is Blonde Ambition. Good Album.

    Money=!ambition

i don't hate anyone, i hate the attitude! you're doing computer science, fair play but not everyone has the aptitude. just worry about yourself!

do you plan on leaving Ireland to get your €80k salary? what field do you plan on working in?

Completely unrealistic for 80k after 5 years, I'm in the industry 20 years and 120k would most likely be the max I would get in Dublin with Big Data experience etc. etc. maybe with some extra perks, car, shares etc.

Just saying, I got into software dev because I love it and still do after 20 years, long hours though, you need to like it

Senior software engineers are struggling to get 80k with certifications galore

Degree doesn't mean **** in software development

    It's all about certification

You'll put the real work in then

Also entrepreneurialism and luck. Over 15 years out of computer science degree and one lad is worth a fortune through his own business and another while not stinking rich is very well off but that was initially through luck in getting work experience in a company he knew very little about and then specializing in a very niche area. None of my actual college friends are on that kind of money.

I admire your optimism for €80k after 5 years as a software dev. You'll need to specialise and be exceptionally amazing at it to get that return.

    Or inflation, who knows?

I'm curious, what language/field would you specialise in? Big Data is where the money is at despite a large number of companies having no idea what they could use the information for. Solve that problem and you'll be wiping your arse with rolls of €100 notes.

Agree with this, certs are junk and a money scam by Oracle/M$/Cisco etc. as they're expensive and you have to redo them every few years.

Github/apache project committers are generically the current best to have

The minmum wage is a disgrace. Clear just over 350 after tax. Hoe on earth can one survive on that especially in a city like Dublin. The tax payer yet again foots the bill with schemes like FIS instead of employers paying there workers a living wage.

80k is possible after 5 years if you get into the right company after graduation, build experience and go contracting. Need to really enjoy the job, keep learning and be willing to put in the hours.

Realistically noone should be on min wage long term, I'm not trying to be an ass and i know people unfortunately have to survive on it but education is relatively cheap in Ireland and we shouldn't have to depend on min wage.

Yeah because thats the only alternative. There is a living wage of 11.50 in Ireland. That should be the minimum wage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 52 ✭✭LC2017

OP what year of study are you in? What college are you in? What projects are you working on in your spare time?
You'll need to be in a top course, get top marks in your class and have a hell of a good work portfolio.
And that's only to get an interview..

Would these people not go to college and at least doubt what there on now a few years after graduating

A reasonable question until this part.

Most warehouse jobs are paying min wage. Somevody has to do them. There is a huge % of the population not fortunate enough to go to college for whatever reason. Im not saying everybody should be on 20 quid an hour but pay them a wage that they can live on.

I don't know about software development, but another field where you can make very good money is IT sales. Big demand right now for salespeople in Dublin especially, so many tech companies fighting to hire people. If you have 2-3 years decent IT sales experience you can make 70k-80k. You can make 100k+ if you do well and progress over a few years and hop between companies. Have a read of this - it may be a stretch in 1000 days but it can be done in 5-7 years.

What baffles me is how few people actually set out to study what careers can pay top money and steer their careers towards that. Many just go into whatever and wonder why they never got rich.
