    So my phone decided to stop charging last week and I haven't been able to get it back working, which is a massive pain on its own but its made so much worse by the fact that I am leaving for VC next week.

    Ideally I'd like to wait and just pick up a phone a few days after I arrive but I'm nervous enough about traveling so really want to sort something beforehand! I was going to try and pick up something here and bring it over with me but I've found a load of threads shouting 'incompatibility', so now I dont know what to be buying!

    Does anybody know what I should be looking for? I was going to go down to carphone warehouse and ask but I'd rather know what I'm looking for first. A lot of what I've googled is to do with the service provider more so than the phones compatibility.

    Some networks use different bands in Canada. The list of bands used by each operator is here

    https://matrixmobile.ca/frequencies/

    You can then check your phone on gsmarena to check which bands it supports.

    Thank you for that Circular! Are there any networks you'd recommend?

    It depends where you are going and what you want. The big 3 are Rogers, Telus and Bell. There are some virtual operators too (Chatr, Fido, Koodoo, Speakout etc..). In Vancouver anyway, I found with the virtual operators that the coverage got very spotty when outside of the downtown area. Coverage has never been an issue with Telus or Rogers but they are more expensive.

    Just in case anybody is looking for something similar I picked up one of these (http://www.gsmarena.com/alcatel_pixi_4_(5)-8157.php) in Argos for €66. Dual-sim, unlocked and looks like it will work in Canada

    It may.
    The phone you got;
    2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

    The phone I have;
    2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2
    GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2 - India
    3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

    The phone I have worked with a re-seller (chatr), but none of the main teleco's.

    According to https://matrixmobile.ca/frequencies/ , Bell, Rogers and Telus are all compatible with my phones frequency.
    Bell
    HSDPA 850/1900

    Rogers
    GSM 850/1900
    HSDPA 850/1900

    Telus
    HSDPA 850/1900

    Probably wont know for sure till I get over there!

    Rogers are good, but charge high for data.

    Most charge a fair bit for data.

    But the data is mostly "high speed data"; you get the first X amount at good speed, and then it'll drop to barely enough to Facebook with, no videos, after your cap. Some just charge per amount you use, to get around this, however.
