Ardiuno or Raspberry Pi?

Hey guys!

I have the whole summer ahead of my self to learn some cool things and to do cool projects.

I am wondering, which would be better overall for a hobbyist? Like, which one would have greater potential for more interesting and diverse projects? I do know that you can also use both and do very cool things, should I get both?

I have experience using ardiuno to set up sensors and collect data, but that is the extent of my knowledge.

I'm looking for personal opinions.

It depends on what you want to do.

In general I'd say it is often easier to control hardware from an Arduino as you have a dedicated microchip. On the other hand the RPi is better at managing multiple tasks and acting as a server.

Some times they work well together - at the moment I'm working with both to build a system to drive a large model crane. RPi has over all coordination, but the Arduino can act independently in the event of a mechanical malfunction in order to recover or prevent damage to the model.

My board of choice is an ESP8266, which is arduino compatible board with built in wifi. I am amazed by what you can do with $4 boards. I think it's well worth picking up a couple.

I just bought one of each, an Arduino Uno and a Raspberry Pi 3. Had them for a few weeks.

The Arduino is simple and nice for making LEDs light up. It can source and sink higher current than the Raspberry Pi, so it can be used to control directly some devices that the Pi cant. This is sort of a moot point though as both need to be interfaces with a relay board to control any device that pulls any amount of current. You have a little compiler to write code and send it to the microprocessor, but there is no operating system on the Arduino. I think it's more for somebody who's interested in Electronics, and wants to interface with a PC.

The Raspberry Pi is a different story. It runs it's own operating system, which is similar to Kali Linux (though you do have a choice of operating systems). So far I have been using it for the following:
- Connected to the TV through on board HDMI and streaming youtube videos, and playing movies from USB.
- installed the aircrack-ng tools and used for sniffing WPA2 handshakes.
- Installed Teamviewer for accessing over the net.
- Installed Real-VNC
- Download C compiler for running C programs (with a view to using this to control the inputs and outputs). ]
- Browse the web.
Have to say, I'm blown away by it. It's absolutely incredible. Built in wifi, four usb (albeit 2.0), built in bluetooth, built in HDMI, built in Ethernet.

I have been working on a project with Pi Zero W, which is a smaller RPi with wireless built in for about £10, dimensions are 65mm x 30mm x 5mm. One USB port (another micro usb for power) and a mini hdmi. Its processor is 1Ghz and has 512MB ram. Most importantly it has the same 40 pin gpio as the other RPi's.

Is it possible to run a Windows version on the Rpi? And if so is there a legal way of getting it free or cheap?

You'd be far better served with one of the Linux builds though. You're not going to be running the vast majority of the apps you're used to seeing on Windows, they'll need to have been ported to ARM or the "Universal Windows" format.

I was thinking specifically about the acestream app. Would love to be able to make a wee cheap player for that.
