So I recently started a new job and one of the benefits is that I get to use the gym for free so I am going to take advantage as much as I can ( why not the money is crap) .

The only problem is I was up until six years ago just naturally fit as most teenagers are , I never set foot in a gym and I don't want to look like an idiot when I don't know how to use the equipment.

I am just really wondering if I might get some tips on what exercise someone who wants to lose weight and tone up at the same time without being laughed out of the gym.

Most people in gyms (in my experience) are sound and wouldn't laugh at you for that anyway. Best thing to do is get the initial induction where staff will walk you through and explain each machine to you. They'll also usually offer a free personalised programme.

And don't be afraid to ask other members , it's a good micro community in a gym and most people like to help each other out , just a quick hi to someone and your away , I've made plenty friends from the gym

Going to the gym everyday Wontt lose you weight unless you get your food intake right.
Ask the gym instructor to show you compound excersises with barbells and dumbells. Stay away from machines and smith machines.
If you want to lose weight the eat a calorie deficit.

The thing is though people always assume because I have gained weight that I eat alot I genuinely eat the same as I did when I was sixteen , I literally put on 6 stone in a year six years ago and I still have no idea how.

That's very strange. So in 1 year with no dietary changes you gained 6 stone and gained nothing since?

Yes I have never went above or below 15 stone , if I was taller it wouldn't be so bad but I am 5,6 so it really makes me look enormous. I have been to doctors and they can't figure it out.

I am glad you have said you saw yer GP as the few times such rapid 'size' gain I have seen has been due to fluid retention which could indicate a potential heart issue. Just double check that maybe before you get stuck in to training programme!?

It didn't happen by magic. You ate more than you burned. But you can address it by cleaning up your diet and getting more exercise in.

I always ate more than I burned , you don't gain six stone in 52 weeks that way normally though . That is just what I've been told.

Anything's possible. I know someone who gained nearly a stone and a half over the space of two weeks.

To use the simplistic 3500 calories/lb, 6 stone works out at ~800 calories over maintenance a day so it's not entirely implausible.

But it's irrelevant now. You need to work on your diet and I would suggest tracking accurately using MyFitnessPal and a digital scales to known the weight of what you're eating.

And definitely don't feel out of place in a gym. Plenty of people there that were in your place once upon a time.

What weight were you before/after this weight gain.

If you always ate more than you burned, you'd always have been gaining weight.

If you eat more than you burn, then you gain weight.
(excluding times where you aren't absorbing energy or anything like that)

From when I was 16 to when I was 20 I weighed exactly 9 stone and I ate like a truck and did minimal exercise , unless fiddling with yourself furiously 5 times a day is exercise, I was a lonely teenager .

    Well all activity burns energy.

If you are loads but didn't gain weight. Then you were buring what you ate.
The only only option is digestive problems

I put on nearly 2 stone in a month, it's possible - was 26, fairly fit looking etc but a trip to the US on expenses put pay to that.

I'd be smiling, it along with the deamon cigs are two of the hardest steps to make, you're already half way :D

For me, cutting out the alcohol finally killed the yo-yo effect, I was dropping weight gradually all week only to put it (sometimes more) back on, the frustration was maddening.
