This is a sample URL that fails here ...

    http://www.rte.ie/archives/2016/0321/776294-building-a-hooker/

I have tried several browsers but failed to get anything other than a black screen or else an Ad-Block warning (Ad block turned off).

Is this peculiar to my set up or do others get the same experience.

Works fine for me on both firefox and chrome on Ubuntu 16.04.

I have ad blocker disabled for rte.ie before browsing to the site.

Do you have the flash plugin installed?

    Ah, it is flash?
    Possibly the problem, thanks.

    EDIT:
I think it is a Javascript problem

    Not that either.

It seems to be detecting ad blocker even though it is turned off :(

Worked for me on PCLinuxOS using Opera. Try an incognito window with all addons disabled?

    Will do next.
Using Opera I am told I need to update flash! :(

Chrome Incognito mode gives me a black screen :(

Have you anything in your hosts file? I have the same issue here (adblock detected) but if I clear down hosts, it plays fine.

    Thank you!

Yes, clearing the hosts file allowed it to work.

There was nothing in the hosts file referring to RTE (I checked previously).
So I don't know what was in there that caused it, but it seems definitive there must have been some entry there that did it.

    Problem located, thanks again. ;)
