I disagree, golf club or Hurley or baseball bat etc are are all crap home defence weapons , too long , you need something that works in a dark hallway like a lead sap or a roofing hammer or three mangy gaurd dogs.

You should be allowed keep a can of pepper spray and a goggles in your own home, seems harmless long term and from what people I know in the Gaurds have told me it's a great way to pacify people. Before it's introduction they would just bop you in the head with a batton.

Would I kill an intruder? No if I thought they were there for my stuff I'd show them that I wasn't a soft target and I'd probably just run them but if they went near the wife or kid I'd wrap them in barbed wire and throw them in a bog hole.

I didn't see anyone suggesting capturing and keeping the intruder.

If I produce my unloaded single barrel shotgun to just use as show to clear an unwanted visitor and i don't report said incident and the Gardai get wind of it they'll be out to me hotfoot to remove my shotgun and revoke my licence. Nowhere on my licence does it allow its use to threaten someone regardless of their intentions or for self defence. If i do use it in such a manner it'll be my last time holding my gun.
Padraic Nally (who i regard as a hero who was pushed to the limit by kxxxxers) will never hold a gun again.

No licence needed for a goose. It's becoming clearer and clearer that they are indeed the best home-defence implement.

That and if the bloody burglar so much as tripped because you had a loose stair, chances are they'd sue you blind and walk away with big compo. The lads going "I'd kill 'em stone dead" ought to have a bit of a think on. Ye would in yer shyté. Your life as you know it would be over.

It happened me 12 or 13 years ago and I didn't even aim anywhere near them. At a push, "warning shots" would be the height of it. Bye bye gun anyway. Hello "cosy chats with lots of Policemen". Re that, after you gain some life-experience, you realise that the police will also always say "if you tell all, you'll get away scot free, we promise". this is your cue to stfu. You won't. Life isn't a Boards thread. Killing burglars tends to annoy the authorities. There are consequences.

Actually recently the DPP refused prosecute someone who had killed an 'intruder'.

I don't note that at all but thankfully it is. Burglars tend to bugger off if disturbed and the law should encourage them to do so with the knowledge that the law will be on the side of the lawful occupier smacking you aside the head with a Hurley.

Assuming that it is a choice completely in my hands (such as I am pointing a loaded gun at them and they have no weapon) then it would depend on what the situation was.

Somebody making their way out my door with my TV in their hands - I'm not going to shoot them in the back as they leave.

Somebody being a threat to the safety of my family - yes, and I'd like to think, without hesitation.

But I don't think anybody can really be all that sure what they'd do in that moment.
