Just a heads up to anyone planning to walk the wonderful Mayo section of this walk. We trekked from Aasleagh Falls northwards over the weekend and had to divert from the riverside route just SW of Houston's Bridge on Friday as 'No Entry' sign across stile. We diverted through gateway on to busy and narrow N59, rejoining the route by taking a left turn after a couple of kms up the road which brought us back to the trail at Houston's Bridge.
No hardship really on the most stunning walk I've ever done but posting just to make people aware.

That's odd if it's a designated part of the trail (unless there's works being carried out). Might be worth notifying the walking development officer in the county council: http://www.mayowalks.ie/AboutUs/

Just presumed that it was because of time of year (lambing season) as field we couldn't cross was full of ewes and lambs.

Ah that could very well be it, fair enough if that's the case.

If that was it, a slightly more polite sign explaining the reason, and showing the required detour would have been nicer.

    How is that a reason?
If it was bulls, then maybe...
