I need fresh air and a little socialisation on occasion. Thought I'd ask if anyone else wanted to come out and play. :P

LOL, true dat, One needs proper social interaction from time to time.

Which reminds me, an FYI for all you Tabletop Games fans, Cloud 9 Cafe, under The Junction Pub, run a D&D/Board Games/MTG night every Wednesday from 6pm until late. Was there last night and was fairly packed, great atmosphere and good coffee and cakes, all welcome!

That's the height of my socializing lately! Yes we are nerds, yes we know.

Quite a big nerd myself at heart. Software Engineer, Trainee Accountant, loves Star Trek and can't wait for the new season of Discovery, which I thought I'd hate initially.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭pawrick

Still have mixed views on discovery myself although it turned out much better than I expected so will stick with it, just finished rewatching DS9 for the umpteenth time. Not interested in a boards meet up myself at this point in time tbh but I do think it's a good idea.

The preview for season 2 of Discovery looks good. Can't wait and Sir Patrick Stewart is coming back as Picard. I feel I need to make my wife binge on TNG, then re-watch the movies.

OK, getting back to the town of Athlone now.
Does anybody know where I can see a map or aerial photo of the layout of Athlone before the bypass was built?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,236 ✭✭✭Dr. Kenneth Noisewater

Ordnance Survey website has access to historical maps on their website from the 19th and early 20th centuries. They also had/have old satellite imagery but the earliest you can see of Athlone is from 1995. I definitely remember coming across old satellite imagery of Ireland from the 1980s, possibly on Google earth, but the resolution was rubbish and you couldn't see any detail at all, really.

Thanks, someone told me you used to have to go through Garrycastle to get onto the Mount Temple road. Looking at the aerial, even the latest one I can see how that would have worked.

Before the dual carraigeway the road went through Garrycastle, Altown, Blyry and up to Mount Temple.

Down the strand is probably the easiest if your in the prince. It has limited enough spaces but if you get parked its the most suitable i would think

Where exactly is that? I had been thinking of Dunnes Store or Golden island

The strand (road running at the rear of the Dunnes stores car park)

Careful of golden island, i think they lock up the car park at night but I'm not 100% sure on that.

the Prince itself has limited parking behind it

Golden Island put up barriers in the carpark over night so stay away from there. As you head towards the prince coming from The east side of town turn left down any the little laneways towards the shannon and anywhere along there.

    What about Dunnes car park?

    Dunnes or St Mary's Square.

Is the multi story car park at the old Texas store in use again?
Passed by the other day and noticed the lights inside were on.
There was a sign outside advertising free parking and there were some cars inside.

Seemingly was free for a day for the opening. Don't think its a 24 hour or anything but looks to be open for business

Work has finally started on the filling station on the M6. Cones out this morning and construction traffic signs.

Should have been pulled down years ago.

It gets the prize for being the ugliest structure in Athlone.

Convert to apartments i would say, but that'd be sensible. Make sure everyone has to commute in.

About time something is being done with it. Wasn't it held up in some legal battle for a while?

That would make more sense. The old football pitch behind St. Patricks terrace, beside the old FAS unit would make an idea spot for additional apartments if the demand is there.

Was there not a whole load of local protest when that fas building was built about the local pitch being ruined or some such (and now that same area, last time I looked was an over grown unused mess of an area)

    Some good news im advertiser.

Greenway extension granted funding to bridge. 3million to include tunneling under dunnes. Bit ott for a small town i thought but the new bridge will really pull in users of the greenway and hopefully make some lolly for the surrounding shops cafes etc.

Also a link road from garycastle road to IDA business park. Brilliant idea. Traffic that direction is getting hectic.

Making it happen. Good man Boxer

Tunnel under dunnes will be prime spot for drug use...assault...etc.
Not to sound negative because the greenway is a great thing...but a sad reality .

Would it not be cheaper to knock Dunnes and re-build it?

They are not literally tunnelling under Dunnes. At Dunnes, the Greenway has to get from North of the active railway to South somehow. The active railway is up on an embankment as it approaches the White Bridge over the Shannon, so alongside Dunnes, the greenway has to come down off the embankment and then under the railway.
