Subject choice for Leaving Cert?

I am in 3rd year and doing TY next year but I want to start picking my subjects now, just in case I am not picked for TY.

I am struggling to pick subjects though because the only subject I really like is Maths (I am also really good at it but not sure if that will change in leaving cert), I enjoy metalwork too but the teacher isn't great, he does mostly practical. For the sciences my favourite is Biology and then Physics, I don't particularly like either. I will probably do Ag Science for leaving cert as I live on a farm...

To help me decide what subjects to choose I decided to see what types of jobs I would like, engineering seems like a good option for me. Civil engineering would suit me the best, I think.

Am i going about this the right way, I am not sure if I would like Civil Engineering though because I don't like geography. I love nature but I hate most chapters in the book.

Can someone please help me decide on a job that would suit me and then I could be able to pick my subjects better?

    Thanks so much.

Hi I'm not an engineer, but from my experience through friends, You should keep the maths and sciences (physics) for all types of engineering. The rest I'd pick based on what you feel you could do best in to get your points up. (If they're still using the points system by the time you finish)
Also, it might be a good idea to check with the colleges what they're looking for. Honours maths is normally a must though.

Physics sounds good, it's mathematical and it will prepare you for engineering.

Stay away from Biology if you're not passionate about it, same with Geography. The syllabus is very long for Biology and geography require to learn long essays.

Did you consider chemistry? It's an interesting subject, not long but you have to keep up with the study as the different chapters tie in with each other.

Ok thanks, ill keep on Physics even though i'm not too keen on it, I have one of the smartest teachers in the country that teaches it but she can't control the class so it will be hard to listen in class but she corrects work you do in exam papers and gives it back to you the way the examiner would so I should be able to get a good grade in that.

I have considered chemistry but I am really confused about that subject, I just dont understand the atoms and that type of thing. That might be though because I never did my science homework and because the teacher (for 3rd year) is absolutely terrible.
The teacher for leaving cert was an ag science teacher and when the Chemistry teacher retired he took over because no one else was available to hire so he might not be great.

In 5th year from day 1 I am going to start making notes and studying what I did that day, each day of the week will be dedicated to a subject (7 subjects). So I should be able to do good in the subjects.

So for the leaving cert if I did chemistry and physics should I not do Ag Science?

Should I do engineering or does it matter, should I do a business?

RovHey, you sound v similar to me. I was excellent at maths and science. I chose to do physics and chemistry for leaving cert. I really hated chemistry and it was so hard and unenjoyable to get that A1 but I went on to do medicine so chemistry was a necessity.
Not having biology will never hold you back (it's very simple, if you have the brains you'll know the whole syllabus in weeks), but chemistry is difficult and I'm glad i did it full time.

Don't you need biology for medicine?
