All it takes is for somebody to bend the "glass". Thats it. Doesnt have to be the ONT at all.

Can you explain that in lay mans terms please? Lol.

Think about putting a kink in a hose. If you do it, flow stops. Same for FTTH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭Cherrycola

So it could be an external cable issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

At a guess techs working in the area. As you and 30 other share the same fibre disruption is plausible.

I really feel sorry for anyone who has this issue. I rang Eir support today, and the voice message on the eir support line says fault is fixed lol. I got through to support, explained to them I've had no service since Thursday evening, read back to them my case reference and they said they will relog the fault and escalate the 'issue'. 6 days now with no FTTH. I have demanded that the issue be fixed by Friday evening.

I will be getting onto complaints and asking for a manager on Friday afternoon if there is still nobody here.

This really concerns me, even if the issue is fixed, when will it happen again. We've had copper wires here for over 30 years and never once did they break or go down on their own. I've only had FTTH less than 3 months and now a week without it due to a fault. Now that I'm reading that a poster above had same issue this really has me worried, how often is this gonna happen.

And now it's back working again, wtf!? I'm going to leave the fault logged and get an engineer to call as obviously there's an issue with the ONT, as my OH said this happened earlier in the week too.

Is it this new hardware maybe? The engineer fitted a new ONT for our installation, even though there was a larger one here from the previous tenants.
I really hope this isn't going to be like the modem issue, with them failing all the time! The f2000 is a nightmare, I've had 4 in one year!

How did your fault correct itself? As bad as the F2000 is, the errors on the ONT is to do with the fibres connecting to it.

Ive restarted the ONT and modem several times over, checked cabling, everything looks grand and no joy.

No idea, the kids started using the iPad and YouTube was working again, so I checked and the red light was gone and everything was working again!
I received a text from eir then to say the fault was fixed so I'm assuming that means there's no need for anyone to come out and it was an issue in the area rather than with our cabling or hardware. I'll be watching for it to happen again though, if it's something that's going to happen regularly I'll be insisting they send someone to investigate.

good that you got fixed, were you the only house in the area with no service or did it affect other homes?

No idea to be honest. I'm presuming it was a fault in the area, or work at the exchange.

Right, we are going to have to get some manner of extender/signal booster as we are getting no speed on the PlayStation upstairs, as it's in the room furthest from the modem.
Whole house is concrete throughout, walls and first floor, so what would you guys recommend to boost the signal?? Before my teenager has a fit! Lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭Cherrycola

The best solution is to run a cable from your router to a location with low signal and add an access point which uses a different frequency to your WiFi router giving you fill speed on this radio.

How exactly do I do this? What cable do I need and what sort of access point? I'll have to run cable to the upstairs landing, is it thin phone cable you're talking about? Or Ethernet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    He's talking about Ethernet.

Running it is likely quite laborious so Homeplugs should be the first port of call. Plenty for a console.

OpenEir tech is finally here to examine the issue of my FTTH outage, will report back later.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,338 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

Tech gone. The FTTH has to be reinstalled from scratch. It was installed from the incorrect drop box 4 poles back and the cable run under a big oak tree and that's where the problem occured, the fibre is broken half way between my home and the drop box. They are arranging an installation for this Monday or Tuesday and they are gonna try and get it installed from the correct drop box beside my home to avoid the tree's being an issue again along the road.

If the fibre is installed again from 4 poles back, there is every chance the tree's will knock the signal again in the future, so I really hope they can install it from the correct drop box beside my home.

I was just researching homeplugs, do Eir still supply them? Any idea of price?

Isn't your house still showing up as blue on the fibrerollout map? I hope they have no issues relocating you to the correct box. Did you mention this to the installer or eir support?

I never mentioned the blue box icon to them at all. Gonna wait and see what happens on Monday/Tuesday. The tech said I was originally assigned the incorrect drop box and he is trying to get them to change it to the nearest box which is beside my home.

Even if all that works out, it still concerns me about the trees, there are 4 big oak trees before my house and all it takes is one windy night for a branch to break any of the fibres including the main one which runs from pole to pole. I'm gonna ask them about the possibility of getting more of the branches cut on those tree's to avoid this issue every time it's windy.

Just go to your local Argos.

back connected to FTTH, whole new installation, and they manged to relocate to the correct dropbox beside my home! no more oak tree's getting in the way, the chance of tree's bringing down the main fibre run is much lower. So happy i'm back online and hopefully no more problems!. They asked me about my Eircode as well.

Have had FTTH installed for the past 2 months now and all going well - have the 150mb package - one thing I have noticed with all the speedtests that I have run is that I have the same external IP address in every single one of them.
My question is does FTTH have fixed IP addresses by default or is it because i have never powered off the unit on the wall ( Huawei Box) router has been powered off numerous times

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

The ONT(wall) has no involvement in IP, it sounds like your vodafone Ip is either sticky or static.

Not sure where to post this but thought this would be the best place. My FTTH went down last night. Not sure what the fault is and am trying to understand what lights etc should be on and off on the ONT and router
On the ONT - The PON is on The LOS is off and the LAN is on - is this combination of lights an indication of a good connection ?
On the Router the DSL light is on the Internet light is off and staying off and the WFI and Lan ports lights are on
No hanging wires outside was concerned that the high winds the other night may have damaged the cable.
Going to log a call with Eir but just want to understand what kind of issue it is. None of my immediate neighbours have FTTH so cant ask them if they are having issues as it could be an area fault as opposed to just my line.

If the fibre was broken, the PON light would be off and the LOS light would blink red every few seconds.

Maybe give everything a restart to see what happens?

Thanks Gonzo - I have restarted it a few times already and no joy. At work now so can't do anything until this evening. Good to hear that the fibre is probably not broken that was my worry. it is 130m to the splitter with 100m undergound.

Have logged a ticket with Eir - lets see what they come back with

Ok the latest update - tech support went through all the tests and can see my connection is good as far as the ONT so no external damage. Isolated the problem down to the modem so a replacement on the way.

Ok Final update - may be of help to someone else if they run into same issue.
Modem arrived Saturday morning - wasnt expecting a saturday delivery so was well pleased. Plugged it all in and still same issue.
Back on the phone to tech support and through all the tests again - still can't find the issue- Guy says he needs to talk to a mentor - next level up I assume
Comes back with a possible solution - they had seen something similar before - my profile had defaulted back to an FTTC profile in error on their system so the FTTH connection was not validating on their system and therefore not giving me internet access.
He said if it happened again to ask technical support to "do a port reset and force an update on CMS"
It came back about half an hour later and working on both modems. He said that they are still learning the types of FTTH issues that can happen as it is such a new product.

    Hi,

I've had FTTH for approx 3 months now , the 150MB package. I had the f2000 modem installed in the attic in the centre of the house so that the signal could be picked up at either end of a long bungalow. I'm also using tp link extenders to connect a playstation and tv and also to boost signal in a couple of blackspots.

The issue is that for the past 4 to 6 weeks the Wi-Fi signal will drop......you could be watching Netflix on a tablet or surfing on your phone and the page will just hang. Disconnecting the WiFi and reconnecting sometimes sorts it. Mostly it just seems to reconnect itself within 30 seconds, however lately its becoming progressively worse. It ocuurs on ipads 6 years old, a brand new model Samsung Tab A, a Samsung S6, an iphone 6S.....essentially the age of the device doesn't seem to matter. I've switched off the tplinks and sat under the modem in the attic and the same problem occurs...

I'm assuming that the issue is with the eir modem, the f2000? I've done a bit of research and there seems to be people having similar issues to mine?

So, would switching the Wi-Fi off on the f2000 and installing a couple of new access points around the house hardwired via Ethernet back to the f2000 be the solution? Has anyone had the same issue as me. Would anyone recommend any particular type of access points that are compatible with the eir modem, would a home mesh system be overkill?

    http://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/deco/

    Any assistance greatly appreciated.

    D.

The 2.4GHz Wifi band is always dropping off on mine. Just disappears.
It's a known issue (by us and I'd say by Eir at the minute)
I use a second router for WiFi and treat the 5Ghz from the F2000 as a bonus.

Absolute shocker by Eir as most people wouldn't know how to set up a second router and will just think FTTH is ****e

my wifi drops alot on the Sky box and speeds vary widley from barely useable to great on the PS4.

To solve the wifi issues on mobile devices I use the app in the link below.

Thanks Gonzo, I'll give the app a try.

I'm currently using TP Link powerline plugs and then ethernet to the Playstation / TV etc. I know that it does reduce the speed, (down from 146mb to a little under 50mb) but to be fair there has never been an issue with these, its always been the wifi signal that drops.
Thats why I'm looking to switch off the F2000 wifi and connect another router or a mesh system to it. Also as the house is a long bungalow I'm looking for something to reach the entire house, hence why I'm looking at maybe a mesh system.

Has anyone switched off the F2000 WiFi and used another router? If so would anyone be able to recommend one?

    Thanks

    D.
