Looking at the uplift in ransomware attacks, just wondering what recommendations there were for antivirus & ransomware protection? I was thinking of giving avast a try as it reportedly doesn't slow down your machine too much. thoughts or suggestions?

your protected from ransomware on Mac OS. most virus and malware are designed for windows as they make up the vast majority of the market.

i would recommend you not install an antivirus as they cause nothing but problems.

Keep your system up to date, apply updates and patches as they're released.
Turn off "Open Safe Files after Downloading" in Safaris preferences and be sensible when downloading files from torrent sites.
Be careful which sites you allow to execute Flash, Java or Javascript.

Most Malware installs by fooling you into thinking they are legitimate system files or well known or "recommended" applications.
Some so-called System tools e.g. MacKeeper will leave your system vulnerable and lighten your wallet.

Have a look at this: http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/how-remove-mac-viruses-for-free-3594625/

Don't install anything that says Mac anti-anything.
