Coming after the second rest day, some riders will be feeling the effects of the first week more than others; depending on how well they used the rest day to recover, there will be large gaps starting to appear on the GC after this stage.

    General Classification after Stage 9

    Name ............Nationality ....... Team ..Result
    1 Nairo QUINTANA Colombia .....MOV.....42:06:09
    2 Thibaut PINOT .....France .......FDJ.....+28
    3 Tom DUMOULIN Netherlands ..SUN....+30
    4 Bauke MOLLEMA Netherlands ..TFS.....+51
    5 Vincenzo NIBALI .....Italy .......TBM.....+1:10
    6 Domenico POZZOVIVO Italy ....ALM.....+1:28
    7 Ilnur ZAKARIN .....Russia .......KAT.....+2:28
    8 Davide FORMOLO .....Italy ......CDT.....+2:45
9 Andrey AMADOR Costa Rica ....MOV....+2:53
    10 Steven KRUIJSWIJK .....Ned ..TLJ......+3:06

The Giro's first (of 2) Individual Time Trial, despite being just shy of 40km, it is not one for the pure TT specialists with the latter 2/3 of the stage being decidedly lumpy (not much in this part of Italy is flat) and it will favour a rider with good climbing characteristics and GC aspirations. The stand-out candidate for victory is Tom Dumoulin, who climbed so well to Blockhaus and is expected to put a strong TT to take the Maglia Rosa off Quintana - for now anyway, but if Dumoulin slips up, can Pinot put in a better TT to snatch the jersey?

Geraint Thomas seems likely to continue in the race and would have been tipped do well too but having apparently dislocated his shoulder in the spill on Sunday (it popped back in ...), he perhaps wont be able to give it 100% in the longish TT stage. It sounds as if Landa may abandon before Stage 10 with a leg injury - he lost 27 minutes on stage 9.

Nibali might have favoured this TT as a stage to claw back some time on Quintana, but having shipped a full minute to him on Sunday, he is looking less than in top form and may continue to struggle.

Quintana will be ensuring that he does enough to stay in touch near the very top of the GC table. He has the advantage of going off last so will know what the others have been doing and will be able to pace his efforts. He sounds his usual confident self and doesn’t see any gaps occurring, “It’s a long, hard course. I don’t think it should play much against me, because it has some slopes that could help me limit my losses. I should defend myself well against the specialists. It could also be good for me that the GC contenders are not-so-strong time triallists, though Pinot and Nibali always go well against the clock. We hope we won’t concede big gaps so we can tackle the demanding final week in a good position.”

    ROUTE
After the start in Foligno the route leaves the old town centre and takes relatively wide and mainly straight roads for over 12 kilometres, until past Bevagna where the 1st intermediate time will be recorded. The route then starts to climb at an average 4-5% gradient, and reaches Madonna delle Grazie, where the road becomes a false flat up. A fast-running and technical descent twists and turns all the way to San Marco, where the road flattens and straightens out. The route takes a U-turn in Bastardo (second time recording), then a false-flat uphill drag leads to Montefalco. The slopes are never steep, yet the climb is unrelenting so should be well suited to Dumoulins characteristics. The road, narrowed at points, leads all the way to the walled city of Montefalco. The final kilometres are slightly uphill. In the last kilometre, the route descends and passes through a gateway, and then goes up again, on a short, steep ramp, leading into the 200-m long, uphill home straight. If the weather is good, the scenery in this part of Umbria is very, very nice……it's not been dubbed the "Wine Trial" for nothing.

The conditions are likely to be ideal, with light wind and temps up to mid 20s

The first riders are off at 11:50 with live TV commencing very shortly after and the top 15 or so riders will have 3 minute separation on the start with Quintana off at 3:24 and expected to finish around 4:15 (all Irish times)

Will it be dubbed or will it be subtitled?

What's pinot like at TTing? Good chance for big Tom to get time on quintana and maybe take pink. I think Thomas will pull out of the race at some stage especially if the shoulder causes him problems

In the TT in last years TDF Tom Dumoulin took over 3 minutes out of Quintana, on similar lumpy stage. With another 30 km TT on the last stage which is not as difficult i'm thinking TD could gain 5 minutes on Quintana over those 2 stages if he's on form.

Last years results from the Tour.

Had Landa and Thomas been mentioned yet for supporting Froome in the tour later in the year?

Do you mean prior to yesterday or since then?

ProCyclingStats.com have Froome, Nieve, Sergio Henao, Poels and Rowe listed for the TDF. Before the crash yester I would have thought that Thomas would go to the TDF and Landa to the Vuelta.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if they were both pulled from the Giro and added to the roster for the Tour.

Yeah I was thinking the same if they hadn't been mentioned in relation to the tour or vuelta they might be pulled with those in mind. I think they both rode the tour last year didn't they.

Yeah they both rode the Tour. Landa was Sky leader in the Giro but abandoned on Stage 10 because he got sick during the rest day IIRC. He's not having much luck at Sky.

I wouldnt be surprised if they both got pulled/abandoned, but it would be a pretty sh!tty disrespect to the Giro - "I'm only going to honour the race if I have a chance to win"..........kinda of what you expect from Sky (but not them alone) these days.......

Quintana was probably disappointed to only gain 24(+4) seconds on Blockhaus, but maybe he is sandbagging a bit and happy enough to relinguish the jersey for a few days. Whatever, he recognises that Dumuolin did very well

Quintana is eyeing the double this year isn't he? Love to see him pull it off.

OT a bit but watching tour of California here and no movistar , I thought the rule was pro teams were obliged to send a team to world tour events, which this is now

I don't know the answer but I'd guess that there may be a minimum requirement for the number of World Tour races that a World Tour team must enter.

If you look at the start list for Eschborn-Frankfurt – Rund um den Finanzplatz, which is now a WT race, only 11 WT teams took part.

Yeah theres likely a minimum requirement now or something that they've added more events. Stage in Cali today looks like pure hell and I actually feel sorry for cannondale after that crash and abandon he could barely stand after that :(

Speaking of the Tour of California , watching Ian Boswell brings back memories of Sorenson. He is full of sideways movement all over the bike and has the head bob to boot also. It always amazes me how top level pro riders can have such ugly and inefficent looking riding styles.

Wonder will kiriyenka do anything today as a former TT World champ. He didn't do much last year.

Being dipping in and out of the coverage for the Giro, don't recognise many of the riders, but fair play to that sky rider, and still race leader after that slide.

Bob Jungels has gone fastest through the first time check. Thomas is two seconds behind.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,425 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Thomas goes fastest through time check #2.

Only 7 riders (I think) remain to go through time check #1

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,425 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Not great from Nibali at first time check.

Only Dumoulin, Pinot and Quintana left to go through.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,425 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Tom D has the afterburners on from the start.
18 seconds quicker than everyone else so far at time check #1
