    Hi Folks

I'm hoping to sort out my old & current commuter. Its a 2010 Lapierre Shaper 300. I know that a second hand one would cost the same as replacing these parts, but all in all it's a good bike that's served me well and I'd like to keep her running as best I can

I need to replace the Crankset as the chainrings have been bent and I can only use 1 of the 3 (it's triple)

So i guess I'm replacing the cassette and chain too as they must be well worn at this stage?

    cassette Shimano 9S 13X25
    chainset Shimano 30X39X50
    Front der is Tiagra
    Rear der is Sora

Would these two be the correct replacements for these parts

    Sora 9 Speed 13 - 25

    https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-sora-9-speed-cassette-cs-hg50-9-13-25-27257

    Sora 9 Speed 50 - 39 - 30

    https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-sora-3x9-speed-fc-r3030-crank-50-39-30-175mm-533070

    thanks for any advice!

I think if you go with that chainset, you'll likely need to change the bottom bracket as well, as from what I can see online (e.g. http://www.adverts.ie/bikes/lapierre-shaper-300-2010-edition/404922) the 2010 shaper did not use a Hollowtech BB/crankset, which the Sora one you linked to is. BB is only about 15-20 quid mind, so not going to break the bank. Aside from that those parts look fine as direct replacements.

    Hi Cython

Thanks for looking into that for me, I'll get recommended bracket too. Surprisingly hard to find out the exact part of the shimano octalink crankset - no numbers on it / can't find a 2010 catalogue. Guess the whole thing will cost me about €200ish. I've been real tempted to buy a 3speed Kona paddy wagon as a replacement for 'just' €400 more instead - but how wasteful would that be just to shelve the lapierre

    Cheers

Wasn't there some change in the Sora groupsets last year that mean older shifters don't work with newer derailleurs? I could be slightly wrong on that one.

Have you tried Rose Bikes in Germany?

I recently upgraded to a 10 speed Tiagra groupset. The two speed tiagra crank is cheaper than the sora that you're looking at. I was happy with 2 x 10 on my bike. I also changed bottom bracket. Think it cost me around €250 altogether. I prefer having an older frame with newer components, I don't worry as much about locking it around town.

If it's octalink (wasn't sure from photos whether it was that or square taper) then something like this would fit on the same BB: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/shimano-claris-2403-octalink-triple-chainset/rp-prod110183

Of course depending on the nature and extent of the bends you're talking about on the chainrings, could you just replace them on the existing crankset spider?

I had asked CRC support for advice but they said they didn't have anything compatible.. that looks like it meets all requirements, but it refers to an ' 8 speed drivetrain'? I've no idea what that means.. mine is 9 speed? It has the same ratio on the chainrings however?

Hmm will have to look into that change and compatibility! thanks

Yeah, I'd happily drop the triple for a double - the triple is embarrassing :P

Decathlon do a very cheap but serviceable triple crankset for ?20 , I put one on a neighbours bike about a 2 years ago and its still going strong . It will fit straight on an older square taper Sora compatible bottom bracket. A new b/b though is only about ?15.

Worth bearing in mind that the Decathlon triple comes with 170mm cranks. I got these and only discovered post-fitting (I was running 175mm before).

I could have switched the crank arms (both same brand) between the old and new set but decided against and just went with it - no noticeable difference TBH.

Triple chainsets are a right pain though, especially front derailleur setup.

had a closer look at the bike at lunch and found the Octalink crankset code and then found it on bikeonlineshop.net along with the cassette. The recommended BB is es25 but it seems to be updated to es300. Found the shimano guide for the crankset so I should be sorted with a bit of luck.

need to rest the eyes now after all the hard work I did today in the office, got lost in down a serious rabbit hole of cranksets etc but I learned a fair bit :P

    thanks for all the help
