Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Grain Dryer Choices

    Well folks,

    Thinking of applying for the grant on a grain dryer. We never had one before and its all we really need thats on the grant.

    What are the best makes out there?
    Who sells them and what are they like to deal with?

    Unless your shifting grain fairly quick on a defined moisture contract a drying floor will be cheaper in the long run with gas to dry air going in.
    Any idea if you want a static or mobile, continuos or batch? Gas or fuel oil..
    You'll probably need triple phase to run a plant with dryers and conveyors to shed or a similar generator. Can get mobiles that run on the pto of a tractor, just need to keep it's rad clear as they can be dusty/chaffy.
    mecmar/pedrotti would be the 2 common mobile driers, both italian.
    Allmet/Alvan blanch/svegma/cimbra would be static continous flow driers.
    Run a big svegma continuos flow but do it on contract work mostly, we use gas oil and it costs about £2.20/% of moisture per ton to dry and clean crop with about 1.65 being energy costs and the rest capital and running, but this is on a big scale drier with the system refined to have conveyors etc working as little as possible.
    A batch - mobile will be a fraction of the capital cost, but will be nearly double the cost in energy costs per ton. Mobile driers have a defined life span correlating to tons of use and need to be kept dry as rust can become rife on thin polished metal. You will also need to do alot more handling of grain with a batch drier.
    Kerosene will be the cheaper fuel, but needs to be atleast 10% cheaper to offset the cost as requires extra over oil to give the same energy as fuel oil. A 12ton batch will be in the ball park of 35k euro vs a cf drier at about 10k per ton of output as require conveyors/reception pit and wet bins also. A basic concrete shed will be in the region of 80euro/ton depending on how well you want to finish it. A lishman floor vent system is very good if going a pedestals route as less work and can bolt covers down to be more versatile. Silo bins are a bit meh imo, cost about 120£/ton of capcity and can sweat with high moisture grain without stirrers and a BIG fan to get enough air evenly.
