Hi me and 3 friends are going to a music festival in england in august (creamfields). We will be canping for 3 days and where wondering how we would go about bringing a tent on the plane? Can you bring it on without paying extra?
    Thanks.

Assuming it has metal poles and pegs, it's likely you would have to put it in the hold. Depending on the airline, yes, you would have to pay the baggage charge. Check the terms and conditions of each airline.

Is ferry & train / bus an option? Through tickets should be available.

Whenever myself and friends go to festivals and camp we each split the cost of putting the tent into a proper roller bag along with the sleeping bags/ground mat things and anything else of bulk.

Can ditch whatever you don't wish to bring back

We then have backpacks for our clothes, wear the wellies on the plane and keep the travel light.

You can bring tent poles as part of a tent pack as carry-on luggage if you like, but tent pegs would and could be classed as a potential weapon so have to be put in the luggage hold. Might as well all pitch in a few quid, buy the space for a check-in bag online and put it in the hold when flying, rather than face being told you can't take it on the plane.

What i always do is, to bring luggage and split with friends. we put tents and sleeping backs etc in there and the rest is hand luggage. its the easiest way and less hassle, especially if you only bring a cheap tent with metal etc in it

As others have mentioned, we would usually split the cost of a check in bag between 2 and stick the polls and such into the big case as well as anything else we can't fit into carry on

Classy! :) Although at least it's easy to take them off / put them on at security.

Would it be any cheaper and easier to buy a tent over in UK and leave it behind?
Saves lugging it over and back and saves on the extra baggage charge.

    i doubt it.
extra luggage (depending on airline) is somewhere between 10-20E
unless you are really lucky finding such a cheap tent over there (not to mention the running around in shops etc)
